I'm in the early stages of making my own visual novel. So, I have been and going to various sites, and reading about other peoples visual novels.
It seems like most people use Ren Py or some other engine to make their games, but I'm planning on coding my game from scratch.
Does anyone here code their own engines, or am I the only one crazy enough to do it?

Nothing wrong with that!
Making your own engine from the scratch is a very good exercise in programming and moreover, it is a point of pride if you get it right.
You should choose the language carefully though.
But good luck!
(For the point, I do code my own engine in my spare time)

I don't code my own engine, but I do code useful functions to make Ren'Py more friendly to RPGs. I know that Jake is programming a combat engine for Ren'Py...

I've been using it for over a year to make games, and compared to what I'm currently doing, a visual novel seems like a holiday code-wise.

I'm designing a VN editor-creator-packager for use with Glint 3D engine. I can't code for the life of me, but I have a pretty good idea what kind of tools I want and how they should look like.
Are you coding from scratch or could we exchange ideas?
