Real Life

#1 Post by Friendbot2000 » Sun Jun 12, 2011 9:06 am

Ugh, I just got back from a trip to the inspiration vacuum and boy am I tired. I feel really bad that I haven't updated my site in a month and I have done absolutely no work on my VN projects. Part of it is because I got distracted by my shiny, new Fallout: New Vegas game(been a fan of the series since the first game, I have all of the collectors editions plus duplicate copies for playing....yeah, I am a nerd.) and the other half of the equation is REAL LIFE! How do you all balance work, life, play, and game making when you are in a creative slump?

Dude.. I rarely script/program on school days.. also, if I'm in a slump.. I play Cosmic Break or lash it out at some bar or something.. Vodka tastes great when you're out of ideas XD....

All game/computer related stuff are done on weekends.

I don't. I try and make time for my creative stuff, but real life stuff like work and stuff take priority. Now if I was any good at time management, I could probably do it, but I'm not, so I struggle a lot and just try to do my best.

(oot, Fallout made me ragequit when it kept freezing. Okay game overall, but I thought the third one was better. Needs romance -w-)

I guess it depends on your priorities. Regardless of whether you are in a creative slump, you still need to feed yourself. If that is provided for, then next would probably be work or school depending on your age. The amount of effort you put into school or work will usually determine your results. I would say game making is also a part of playing, especially if it is not your career. Once you know what your priorities are it comes down to time management. We all have the same amount of time to get things done and I suppose it is what we do with our time that makes us different. Don't get me started on how lucky we are to have the time to talk about game making it will lead to a very depressing conversation.

Exams at the moment but I'm still managing to distract myself with Renpy. But I'm not even scriptwriting like I should be. I'm just previewing my game and making minor adjustments to what I have.

I forget about my hobbies and everything, and finish my homework first thing when I get home. Then I use whatever time I have leftover which should be a lot since I'm a total nerd that thinks homework is easy to draw and stuff.

... Is what I dream. But in actuality this is how I do it: Relax to the max, be a lazy bum. Then the period before my homework is due, I do the homework last second, and hope that it doesn't look rushed. Well the fact that I can do homework fast and well is true though. 8) (It saves my life by a ton) But really. I think people should put their real life as their priority while leaving the other stuff such as hobbies for later when they have free time. After all... in the end, it's only real life that actual matter, screw that up, and you're pretty screwed.

I don't balance. My priorities are all twisted. Here's how it is for me:
- VN
- laziness
- VN
- Don't go to sleep til 3ish.
- Tv, music, and/or VN
- Social life
- Play stuff at theatre
- Get back home
- Repeat

Back when I was in school, I would do homework and study in the class before it or at the beginning of that class xD

When an artist or game maker asks me if I'm making a game right now, I always reply:

"Yeah, my projects are on hold or making slow progress too. Don't worry about it. We'll all get there one day."
I'm not even the same person anymore

It's quite easy if you follow the right steps!

1. Sleep is for the weak.
2. That food thing can be done at any time of the day, even while you are working.
3. Any spare time you have can be converted into valuable work time if you have a notebook. They're cheap, easy to carry around, and can fool people that you are actually working on real work.
4. If you look busy, you can sometimes get away with creative work during regular work time. Just make sure you've done enough actual work to fool others in case someone decides to check up on you.
5. What is more important to you: A social life or playing games?
6. Remember: gaming will never trade you for a younger model, but you can trade it in without a messy legal battle.
7. A slump is just another phrase for filler material!
8. When all else fails, just slack off on creative creation and school work until the very last minute. Procrastination will led to massive amounts of wonderful inspiration, following a massive heart attack from the sudden realization of just how screwed you really are.

Sad thing is I'm being perfectly serious. :?

This list is so true, though... Especially 1, 3, 4, and 5. XD

I tend to slack off on real work in favor of game work and pretend to study while actually writing script notes a lot.

Whatever it is, please have enough sleep. Lack of sleep will kill you... very slowly... and very indirectly. I really wish I could hibernate like those animals. It is said that hibernating once every year or two will prolong your life up to 10 years.

8 hours is the most ideal for most human (for teenagers to adult). Babies and children need more sleep since they are in growth spurt and elderly need more rest since their bodies aren't as fit anymore. So for us in LSF, 8 hours is good.

It's not you have to sleep exactly 8 hours a day. If you're busy and could only afford to sleep for 3-5 hours for several days straight, then be sure to compensate by sleeping for 8-10 hours for the next several days. Remember that fatigue is cumulative. You build that up slowly without you notice it.
