Petite/loli protagonists in otome games?

#1 Post by Fawn » Wed Jul 20, 2011 1:14 am

What do you think of a game having a petite/loli protagonist, like Taiga Aisaka (http://www.absoluteanime.com/toradora/taiga.jpg) or Madoka (http://images.wikia.com/madoka/images/9 ... 371545.jpg) for an otome game?

I myself am somewhat petite and think super short person x tall person couples are adorable...

But, what do you think? Would it be weird for you? Also, what kind of protagonist(s) do you like generally?

I don't really fancy loli charas but I do like Taiga. Anyway, I like a heroine who is tall and her guy shorter *shot* Something like, lovely complex. That was very cute <3

The heroine I like is manly, cool and tsundere and tall. I dunno. I developed this kind of fetish for them after reading some gender bending mangas... I'm not joking. Dx

Hate it, and I loathe any otome game that has it. That's because that seemed to be all I had to choose from in the quality Japanese otome market, before the English GxB boom. Impossibly big breasted lolis was the only way the male dominated VN companies could even consider making an otome game (or a boring office lady drama) apparently. On top of that, they give her an annoying squeaky voice and make it an H game. Which, btw, focused more on her in CGs and usually involved her screaming "NOOOO." I hate it, because it's so obviously not for me, even though it was called otome. I put up with it because that's all that there was, and now that I have the choice, I'm going to definitely choose otherwise. I even had huge trouble with the remake/port of Star Ocean 2 where Rena was made to look like she was ten years old, but her voice was fine, but everytime I saw her face, I wanted to barf. It took some getting used to, because I'm tired of seeing it. I don't think it's cute or funny, but then, I just plain hate pedophilia, so I hate lolicon/shotacon. Not sure if this applies to anyone else, or if I'm just an extreme.

I like girl MCs that aren't spineless, dependent moe-blobs, and have a sense of humor. In general, I like MCs with a defined personality that grows over the course of the story. I would not play an otome game with a loli MC. I don't wish to look or act 12 again. I want an aware protagonist who knows wtf men and sex are.

@Fawn--> Loli protagonist? why not? 8)
Whether you make it into otoge or galge, I'll definitely play it (assuming you have a real reason to put lolis into your story, not just putting them into raep scenes like what happened in many h-games).
There are two type of loli : the real "under-age" loli (example : Rin-chan of Kodomo no Jikan) and loli-alike (adults who look and act like children).
I prefer the first type though; lolis with big breast are just too weird for me...

@ Aleema: I do believe you're generalizing all possible petite protagonists on Sugar Bean's games... Which I'd have to agree, I hated those games too, the protags all looked like some kind of 12 year old porn stars with d-cup implants.

True loli, like a little girl who knows nothing, would be super creepy; I more meant the body type. As a girl who's always been concerned about sizes (if you know what I mean) it would be nice to have a protagonist that didn't have a typical woman's body. There are plenty of us that are grown adults and still have no curves what-so-ever <__<;

Ehem, anyways, as I was expecting, not much love for anything related to moe in the otome community. I guess it's one of those things that people just look at the bad examples and not the good.

Janet's got huge eyes and practically no 'figure' (and doesn't particularly care) - I get a handful of complaints from people that she looks twelve, but plenty of other players don't mind. Honestly, no matter WHAT your artistic choices are some people will be angry at you.

If you want to be safe, try to make it clear that she's small, not underage.

Also I know a super-shortXtall-person couple IRL. I've seen her climb on a chair to kiss him. :)

Under the Moon is a good example, yeah. I believe every otome game by that company is just WTFFF. There are some others I've played not by them, but the names were Japanese so I can't really remember ... >=[ I just played one, damn it, why can't I remember? I uninstalled. Anyway, Sugar Beans was NOT the only company doing loli. I should say, however, that recent otome games are much higher quality than the old school ones. I suppose epic fails some misguided attempts are to be expected from the beginning of a genre. =P

No, not really. It's a physical appearance thing for me, and not based on one company's games.

I think tiny girls vs huge men are about the same, in my eyes. I don't want to hurl when I see them, but I'm very uncomfortable with ... let's say ... Serah x Snow from FF13. She looks like she's freaking 13 and Snow looks 28, and he's 3 times her size. To me, that reeks of lolicon, even if it's not technically the same. So, no, I can't like smaller bodied girls anymore than actual loli characters. I think Snow is very sexy, but when I see him next to Serah, all I can do is frown (and the Pedobear makes an appearance). It's not enjoyable when I think the man only likes the girl because she looks illegal (and that's honestly the only thing I can think anymore ...) The most successful otome protags are the ones that look as plain jane as possible, even ugly or boyish. So that when the men fall in love with her, it gives the player this "aww he likes me for me and thinks I'm beautiful no matter what" endorphin rush.

I honestly can't relate to a tiny little girl, because I'm an adult and the world is not full of gigantic Snow-sized men to dwarf me. Chest size whatever it may be (you can have flat chested mature women, no chest doesn't imply loli), if the girl looks 12 > I'm not interested.

@papillon: Janet honestly does look loli. o_O You have to compare her to the world she's in: all the men have long faces with eyes proportionate to their head (in anime terms, lol). Janet's are too big, which make her look childish.

...And the very reason why I can't remember its name at first too(googled it for confirmations.lol) Under the moon was epic disaster. I could pretty much bare a yaoi game even though people might think that its disgusting(and I don't think so, since I'm very fond of BL), than actually feeling like committing adultery with my heroine being such a childish kid who loves her daddy more than any people <.<

But then again! A heroine likeTaiga is a sure win! :) *feels like she just contradicted herself*

I'd definitely play an otome game where one can play the role of smartass loli in the style of Victorique from Gosick:

- solve tons of mysteries Phoenix-Wright style.
- have boys from neighboring kingdoms and even the Far East hit on you (or alternatively, make fun of you -- then you create devious means of enacting your payback).
- have an achievement system whereby you can wear new frilly dresses the more cases you solve.

Secret societies, royalty, and assassination plots are always a given.

Somebody make this game.

Why not a petite protagonist who is an adult woman (age 20 or 21) but who is built like a teenage girl - hardly any chest, only five feet tall (think Iwabuchi Mana and really suffering because of her stature? She feels she isn't taken seriously, most people consider her sorta cute, a description she hates, and she constantly receives offers from men who think she's a teenage girl and obviously are looking for a way to satisfy a fetish.

@ DaFool That does sound amazing, however my writing skills are most likely not up to the task of that hahah...

@Taleweaver Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. I can understand how she feels >_>

not weird at all, and yup, they're adorable ^^

Well, my standard is pretty low, so I usually have no problem with most protagonists out there :P. As long as the protagonist is not a jerk/egoist/evil/always angry(tsun only, no dere) and looks young (kids or teenager) then I'm good :D. Oh, and megane is a plus X3 !

edit: older protagonist is also okay as long as he/she looks young :D

There's a VNDB tag for this. Currently, the description states, "Her age matters not one bit when it comes to her classification as a loli. This is only about appearance." (source: http://vndb.org/g669 The site contains a similar statement for the shota protagonist tag.) I looked at the VNs mentioned for this tag. Not sure how many were relevant, but Riddle Garden and Da Capo Girl's Symphony are two other genuine GxB stories, the former with adult content, the latter without any.

The way I figure it, anything can be done well or poorly. One of the reasons people state for liking Taiga and the Toradora series is character development. So yeah, it depends on how you write it or present your content. That said, you could make...

* A pure love story about a young woman and at least one older guy. They don't become intimate for years (and even then, it may be offscreen).

* A game which seriously discusses age difference in relationships.

* A story which is meant to be absurd and self-aware. For example, one where the main character is a girl who looks younger than her actual age, and uses her appearance to deceive men and make them squirm.

* A story which uses some aging tropes. An adult suddenly finds herself in a younger body. Or a girl suddenly becomes an adult.

* A game in which you roleplay a teenage/young-looking girl. You decide if she will pursue relationships with older guys.

I still think that a loli-type and a person who only lacks development, is different. Maybe the impression the word "loli" gives me is just really wrong Dx
