First person shooter

#1 Post by Wright1000 » Fri Aug 12, 2011 4:45 am

I know that there are no first person shooter games that has been made in Ren'py.
But has anyone ever tried making one?
I know it is possible if you know the programming, though you may not be able to roam the environment freely.

I know.
All the difference that is needed is making a cross-hair and instead of point and click, it can be made point and shoot.

I would love to make one, but I'm still a newb with programming, so yeah.

It would be interesting to hear if someone did. =)

(I love shooters [both TPS'es and FPS'es], but I also love story-stuff, so that is why I usually
enjoy shooter/rpg mix, like Mass Effect games.)

This is far from an FPS, but the visual novel "Last Bullet" included several point & click shooting scenes. If you've ever seen the flash game "Sniper Assassin", it was basically the same thing as that, only with a relevant story. I don't think something like that would be too far out of the realm of possibility for something that knew Python.

Just google 'sniper assassin', and maybe 'flash game', you should find it pretty easily.

I'm not a fan of FPS games, but I would play one if it was created on Ren'Py ;D My cheap way of making one would be to use imagemaps, but I'm sure there's better way of doing it. Renpygame would probably come into use there.

Off-topic: Why isn't there a Ren'Py button game? Like, just a game with a button and all you do is press it. I created one, but I'm not sure if I could add just that to the game archive. Would that be allowed?

IMO, making an real-time FPS in RenPy only makes it harder for you. You'd better using other engines (GM comes in mind) or creating your own engine from scrap using C++, Java, Basic, or other programming language.

How do you complete the second warehouse level in Sniper Assassin?
I killed all guards and workers but the mission does not advance.

Yup, I'm currently learning GM Lite right now. I am learning GM is much better for action-oriented/hybrid games, which is what I'm
planning to do with my game ideas :) I mean, I love the visual novel aspect, but I want to add some action stuff and exploration in between, so Game Maker might be best for incorporating action. :)

(I tried re-re-learning Flash, but it's way too hard to understand how to make games with it. I know how to do animations and basic button presses/menu choices selection with it [like a Visual Novel], but real-time games are a whole different beast with Flash for me, lol. Maybe I can try again in the future, but for now,
I think learning GML from Game Maker may be better...)

(EDIT: I also heard that the makers of those RPG Makers also released something called Action Games Maker/ IG Maker for action/rpg, side-scroller/platformer kinds of games, but I haven't tried the Trial version yet, so I don't know if it's any good [and it's not made for First-person games either]...So, yeah, Game Maker for the win, lol. :D )

~~
Hmm, Wright1000, that might be a glitch? If I remember the mission correctly, I killed alll 4 guards first [including the one on the bottom floor walking slowly near the doorway and hiding behind boxes from time time] and then killed all of the workers, and the mission advances for me. Not sure why it wouldn't advance for you...? Unless I am thinking of another mission?

If you like GM, it's a very good investment to buy the pro version (or studio version, or whatever they call it now). The pro/commercial version have so many useful feature that blocked in the lite version. GM is still cheaper compared to other engine.

If you don't like GM, there is a new software called Construct. People say it's really good (even better than GM). But I think it's pretty heavy and you need .NET framework to make it run... and I never managed to run Construct on my laptop, so I never tried it.

Yes, there is RPG Maker like software to make action game, it's called IG Maker (Indie Game Maker, guess Enterbrain target specifically Indie studio this time around, since if not, they better called it AG Maker).

But not only it's expensive (US$59.99), they also compiled all the files, RTP, resources, and example games into one freaking big file (1+GB) and have (only one) slow server too boot (I need more than 6 hours to download the trial version/600+MB).

The IG Maker itself isn't bad. It's pretty good despite have some flaws (but then again, which software doesn't have one?). But it's only good at what it's good at (meaning that it's good at making action game and action game ONLY). You need a decent PC to run it (and run the game) and it seems the Flash exporter doesn't work as good as advertised.

Personally, I think it's good but it's not worth it. Better invest your time on GM or Construct. But then again, it's my personal opinion. Try it for yourself to be sure.

I'm squarely in the "Ren'Py is not for FPS games" camp. If you are a good enough programmer to create a decent 3D first-person shooter engine, well...... Why bother integrating it with Ren'Py? It seems like it would be a hassle given that you probably won't be using Ren'Py's niftier features anyway. It would be cool to see, but sort of in the way it would be cool to see someone crack open a coconut using only a chopstick. Just not the tool for the job and it just doesn't make much sense. But it would be cool.

While we're speaking about 3D FPS, you probably want to try Unity. It's free (it's actually commercial, but they have the free version with nifty features stripped down) so don't be ashamed to try it ^_^ People said that Unity is geared toward (quickly) making 3D FPS games than other kind of games.

Since it's 3D though, you need a decent to high spec PC to run it smoothly. And the learning curve for unity is rather high. Well, it's making 3D game, don't expect it to be easy...
