Ludum Dare 21

#1 Post by Watercolorheart » Sat Aug 13, 2011 6:26 pm

This is just a notification that the 48 hour competition is coming up relatively soon next week: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/?ld21

I thought others wanting to do something different might appreciate it as well, since 1 weekend is short enough that even a casual dev can join in.

It's short enough but the amount of work you'd need to pull off will put most people off... Not to mention this is'll need to be done entirely by one person.

I don't wanna put anyone off doing this competition, you have all my support if you can pull this off! Anyway I also thought I'd link in the timelapse of the girl who submitted a Ren'Py game:

Efreet, that was exactly what convinced me to try it myself.

Because I realized even the attempt would be fun. And, also, I really missed missing NaNoRenaiMo last year and NaNoWriMo is still too far away. =(

I think I am going to do the less strict "Jam" version which allows teams. My son, his girlfriend and I will be trapped in a car for 6 hours on Saturday (My husband will be driving). Great planning session. :)

All resources made in that timespan? Definitely impossible for me, but I guess I might try some kind of stickfigure story. I'm confident in my stickfigures.

The theme is up on Twitter - it's Escape! I'm gonna give the Jam version a shot, just for the experience, but I'm keeping it small since I'm new to Ren'Py. Good luck to all who try and keep us posted!

I'll try writing a short story about escape, then, and we'll see how that goes... would photographic backgrounds from Flickr be considered "cheating"? Else I should probably do 'Jam' despite being a single person, haha.

Good luck, Applegate, I'm not sure about photo backgrounds or the like. I'm right there with you on art. I'm trying to create my own backgrounds and characters for the experience (and hopefully improvement), but so far...ugh. Having the same issue with music. It's definitely an experience though. :D

Well, I have a basic skeleton for a story done! I've decided to concentrate on what I can do first and foremost, and bother with my ineptitude when I've satisfied myself a little already. To be sure, I think taking photographs myself right now would probably be within the rules... but I have no idea as yet how to fix the problem of audio. Perhaps I should sing a tune, record it and use that! ... :(

That is a terrible idea, and I shan't pursue it. But hey, who else are engaging in the crazy challenge?

Oh, I'm doing it and I wish I could throw up my current progress but that countdown is hurting me, and Chronolapse won't encode the video because it is clearly lame.

My entry will probably fail in the competition on a technicality: a handful of the 3D models I'm using are sold by DAZ. =(

So I definitely feel on the "art assets" side ... Yeah, I can rip out those pictures and replace in placeholders just to fall strictly in the comp rules but ... really ... ?

I needed a short break from the story, after this I only have character art, any optional CGs to do, and a handful of music pieces ... if I can manage it without collapsing. I tried to code Mystlike imagemap puzzles, but it's definitely not happening in under 24 hours.

Maybe if I wanted to extend the game in the future.

Thanks, Akira. I also finished mine as well, but since it's not Flash, it doesn't get played quite as extensively as other entries.

Lessons for next time ... I've been meaning to learn AS3 anyway.
