depth or variety?

#1 Post by poppyrocks » Mon Oct 24, 2011 12:15 pm

hey guys im making a gxb vn but still wondering about the number of guys that could be obtained.
Since this is my...well not first creation but i've never published a vn before so i'm still a noob at this.

Just wondering whether people prefer

More events and development with the guy, but only 3-4 available

OR

a few events and development with the guy but with variety of them (like 5-8)

if im not making any sense im so sry its really late atm
need to sleep now...

Less guys, more depth. Players, regardless of gender, will want characters they fall in love with, not just a multitude of sprites that look different from each other. The more in-depth your characters are, the better.
The best reason to get up in the morning is to outdo yourself: to do it better than you've ever done it before. But if you haven't done it better by nightfall... look at your globe and pick a spot: it's always morning somewhere.

Less guys, more depth. I think 2-5 love interests is about the ideal number. Any more and your story has to be really detailed/long, otherwise it'll lack depth.

Less guys more depth. I'd agree that 2-5 guys would be a good range. Go to sleep xD

Yeees, if less guys means more CGs, more random scenes and more depth - then please go for it. <3
Can't stand liking a character but having nearly no events with him. D:

Well, have fun! =)

Absolutely more depth! The most important part is that you can really appreciate the path you've chosen.

5-8 guys sounds kind of overkill, anyway. It would frustrate me to have to play through the same game so many times to pursue different characters, and at 7 or 8 love interests it would also be bordering on "come ON, how are that many people into the main character at the same time?"

Also if this is the first VN you're making (unless I misunderstood and you've made them before but just not published), it might be helpful to start on the small side. Good luck!

Definitely depth. The lack of this is why I'm starting to find the bachelor/ettes in the newer Harvest Moon games to be boring, since it doesn't seem like Marvelous is even trying to develop them anymore.

Unless it's a hentai game, in which case, you can throw character development completely out of the window in favor of more variations of genitalia.

KIDDING.

Look at it this way; do you want a few memorable characters, or do you want a whole crew of forgettable guys? Most people will take the first choice since a good story will leave the reader with something to take with them after they're done reading. Just remember these three words: quality over quantity.

Honestly, if I wanted something with a meaningful plot and character development, I wouldn't be playing a hentai game. Does anyone *really* expect a deep and complex plot from something like that?

On topic, depth > variety. If I'm just 'meeeh' toward them, there's not much point in playing, imo.
