Online Visual Novel with Flash

#1 Post by justblue » Sun Nov 06, 2011 9:54 pm

I am making my own VN engine with flash, lol,
I like it, and it can be played online and even can be attached on FB page
the only problem is, the codes or scripts like ten times harder than another VN engine.

does anyone have any suggestion about what I am doing?
is it a good Idea or something?

please share your thought :D

I think it's a great idea :D

I also attempted to make a simple flash vn engine >.<
It's supposed to be simple to edit but... I don't know XD

Flash is really flexible and I've always wanted to make vn in flash but I'm afraid the size would be huge... and slow :O
What I really like about making vn in flash is that I can customize it and I can do animated sprites, backgrounds and lighting :D

I am interested to see your engine :)

You may look into reading text from files such as xml or your own way of formatting stuff. I did a RPG Battle System back in the day with it and it made my life a heck of a lot easier just changing a text file and having the game interpret it rather than have to recompile every time. If you are interested, let me know and I'll see if I can help you out.

Zeiva Inc does VN-esque games with flash so it's definitely possible and successful. I don't know how open they'd be to talking about it, but maybe you can get some minor correspondence set up between you guys to see how they did it.

To be honest, I really like Flash, but the process of learning it truly hard (I tried asking for my boyfriend's help, he said it takes years to really understand it) especially for me who is a self-learner and self-taught. I couldn't find anyone who can help me, and no matter how many tutorials I found, it's a lot easier if there's an actual someone to help you.

I originally wanted to make VN in Flash, but gave up since I couldn't even understand how to get the animations to move. Dx I tried finding a way to make a VN, played some couples of free VNs to fully understand, then I found Ren'Py.

Though I'm still learning Flash to make those OP sequences.

But I'll say, no matter where you make you VN, I'll still play it! I think it's a good idea, and I'm sure you're able to find help even in here. Good luck with you VN as well!

I think, mine is not really an engine, since I must recompile it every time.
may be mine is closer to a template rather than an engine

If you don't mind spend "a little bit" of money, you could try Game Maker HTML5. It's basically a game maker, but the game you made using it now are run in browser (that support HTML 5, obviously). If you buy the beta version right now, the price will be $99 (but the full version will be $199... and usually you could upgrade your beta version to full version for free).

IMO, GM is far easier to be learn than Flash, especially if you want to make games, VN or even full fledged game (as long as it's 2D).
