Evil Uploading Websites

#1 Post by Wright1000 » Fri Dec 02, 2011 9:22 am

I just saw something today that made me a little sad.
I used to upload all my games to 2shared, thinking that it was a good uploading website, but just take a look at this: http://www.2shared.com/file/00XKQwuQ/Hi ... 86tar.html
The linux version of Hired Gun 1 was removed just because it wasn't downloaded many times.
The websites have become too evil. Full of spammers that you don't even know which button to click to download the game. And, hundreds of advertisements.
Here is an example- http://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/downlo ... &mode=view

Isn't there any permanent solution to this?

You could attach your games to the forum.

That's a problem because I have a slow internet connection.
The forum doesn't show the information like... UPLOADING 48% complete...

Most of those uploading websites exist solely to facilitate illegal practices, unfortunately. They claim otherwise, but if you pay attention to the way they work, it's fairly obvious... they want to distribute popular files that would get busted on a permanent host, not to help people who don't have hosting share personal content.

mediafire and megaupload are two sites that are good for uploading your games onto as well :) the account is free but the downside is there is a limit...

This. Usually there is a direct relation between how many advertisements an uploading site has and how trustworthy it is. And yes, I rarely see these types of sites used for anything besides illegal piracy. Most professionals will have their own hosting and dispersal methods, and other more trustworthy ways of distributing large files.

Can't we all VN makers contribute some money and create our own uploading website which will be only to upload our VNs?
I think it will be very convenient. Why should we rely so much on those illegal websites and spammers? How can we speak or take action against spammers if we ourselves are not willing to boycott them?
It seems that deviant art has become evil as well.
Ever since I created an account in deviant art, I keep receiving spam. I receive advertisements about clothes, jewellery, bags, things that I have no interest in.
At least, none of our VN websites have become corrupt.

There's that site, there's this forum, and I think at least at one point Spiky was trying to offer free upload space for VNs as well but wasn't getting much takeup (have to ask him though)

I didn't know that you could directly upload games to the renpy website.

I hope he can. It will be very convenient.

I have a slow internet connection and get 'timed out' when I try to upload a 'larger' VN (anything over 15 MB) as an attachment to a post here. I have had better luck uploading 'larger' VNs to the renai
archive site (http://renai.us/)
I prefer a hosting site where I can see how many time my VN has been downloaded, but that's just me.
All of my VNs are at http://wolflore.net NOTE: Downloads are now working.
Some are at http://www.the-new-lagoon.com. NSFW

Torrents are also an alternative for free projects.
It has the added benefit that it's decentralised nature makes it pretty independent from third party hosting, though the tracker can be a bit of weak point.
