Re: Why use side images?
It would be easy on the artist, but what would the main screen consist of O_O; I can only think of Princess Maker, where they only had the sprite of the Princess and her stats on the main screen and other characters would pop out in windows (I guess you could call them side images?) with their spoken text in a box next to them. So for a stat-raising sim like that I would probably have no qualms. ^_^;

On certain designs of sprite, only the face changes when they change emotions. I like seeing that in a side image next to the text. I have a tough time noticing that the face changed while I am reading the text.

Let's see how this will look like...roankun wrote:Just a thought, then.
What do you guys think of side images without full sprites? At all?
Hmm... this might actually work... I'm gonna have to write this in my 'ideas" list...

But in all seriousness, that is a very interesting idea to do a game with nothing but side-by images. I might have to snag it myself...
My common sense is tingling!

I'd rather see the characters on the main screen than side images.
Some of my visual novels are at http://www.the-new-lagoon.com. They are NSFW

In my opinion, that's how to do side images right.mugenjohncel wrote:Let's see how this will look like...roankun wrote:Just a thought, then.

Any character should only be shown on screen once at any given time.

I am in full support of this.fleet wrote:I'd rather see the characters on the main screen than side images.
I just can’t sit any other way than this. If I sit the way other people do, my reasoning ability drops by 40%.
Re: Why use side images?
I use side images.
Mostly because the resolution is very small (544x416), and it's easier to see the expression of the character changing when it's closer to the text. But my project isn't a VN though.
For a VN I think side images are perfect for showing the main character, and have everyone else in the center from the waist up. It sort of feels like you're really standing in front of them and talking to them, kind of.

Re: Why use side images?
Hmm. I thought side images were a way to cut down on the artist's workload, by having only a single image for each character and using the side image to show the character's mood changing.
I find that with full-size character images, if the only difference between a happy full-size character and the sad version is whether the mouth curves up or down, then I don't notice when I'm reading the dialog, which makes it kind of pointless.
