what kind of game do you want to make?

I heard novelty and renpy are popular for visual novel. If you want to make RPG game, you can try RPG maker.

If you want to make a visual novel without writing code, I'd also recommend visual novelty.

I've never tried visual novelty before, but I use Ren'Py. It's pretty easy once you get the hang of it. But hey, if you don't wanna program then you probably should use visual novelty I guess.

If you want to use renpy,

Download the program and look at the tutorial ( when you start renpy, you can pick it from the menu).

Also take a look at:

http://www.renpy.org/wiki/renpy/doc/tut ... Quickstart

Once you get a hang of the above, you can look at the more in depth tutorial or the cookbook. :)

Good luck!

I've got a question that fits this topic, so I didn't want to start a new thread for it.

I started to use Ren'Py yesterday and it is really easy to use and has a nice tutorial game, which took me about one hour to finish. However, the thing I haven't quite figured out yet is how you get your backgrounds and characters for a visual novel. Do you use a special program for it or do you all hand draw them?
Ren'Py was pointing out some links, but I couldn't really find any "fitting" (anime) character or backgrounds there. So how do you do it?
If anyone knows a decent anime charactor creator or background creator, would you share the link? I've googled a bit and I actually found one, but it's in Japanese. LOL.

@Lina
Well, it depends... Some people are artists and draw their own graphics, and others, like me, can't draw, so they find artists through here. Why don't you search up "free sprites" or "free backgrounds" here? If you don't find one that suits your fancy, you could always go to the recruitment area and post a topic for it.

A good one is Khmix. I actually got mine in english for some reason, but all the hair pieces, clothes, etc. were labeled in some weird text.

It might also help if mangalover45 describes what sort of sprites she needs, so that we can help her find them.

Novelty only works on windows right?
Ren'Py works for all. it's not difficult to use if you're only making a simple VN
and there is more things you can do, with Python and stuff. but that means you'd have to learn programming xD;

I haven't used Novelty, but I heard it's easier for beginners
Now if you're trying to make something completely different, another Engine might be for you, RPGmaker for RPGs etc

Renpy is simply an engine. You have to obtain all assets yourself. A simple google search for "anime character creator" led me to a good 20 or so. Those might be a good place to start if you can't/don't want to draw.

Also, Mangalover, it might be useful if you were a little more specific. Do you want a place to start? A full-blown step-by-step tutorial? Advice on a particular element? What do you want to know?

@ Desu_Cake: I know that Ren'Py is simply an engine. My question was if you use a program (some other than Ren'Py) to create your charactors / backgrounds or if you draw them. And if you use a program, if you are willing to share the link. I did the same google search as you and I can tell you the same character creator pops up under different links. Or you can only create faces with some creators, but not the whole body, which I simply prefer. I'm sorry if I haven't been clear about it. But Chushiki Maho had already answered my question, so thanks to you all for clarification :).

This thread makes me wonder. Wouldn't it be perfect for the site's FAQ to feature the currently best / most popular VN/RPG engines, highlighting their pros and cons (and perhaps even development status) for newbies to peruse?
