Favorite Collaboration Tools?

#1 Post by sciencewarrior » Wed Feb 15, 2012 10:39 pm

I started searching, and found several free or inexpensive tools to organize projects and collaborate online, like http://www.springnote.com/en and http://www.wikispaces.com/ What tools do you use when creating a VN with collaborators? Plain email? A wiki? A file sharing service? A version control system?
Keep your script in your Dropbox folder.
It allows you to share files with your team, keeps backups of previous versions, and is ridiculously easy to use.

I keep it simple and use email. My artist is working two jobs, so she generally gets the most work done on weekends, which I'm okay with, gives me something to look forward to during the work week.
Currently trying to regain my sanity.

I used to use Google Wave for working in teams long distance (I used it effectively for two projects). Unfortunately Google killed it while it was still in beta. It was like having your own shared desktop, where you could have live chat, leave messages, post files for version control, etc. I haven't found anything else like it yet. (I'm still angry at you Google! Get rid of Google+ and give me back Wave!!!)

I worked on some projects (not VNs, though - they were random RPGs) years ago where we had our own private forums and FTP Server for sharing files. The forums were good for communication & building camaraderie, and made it easy for us to show off what we were working on to each other. Now, since my "team" is just myself, I just email back & forth with artists.

I've heard of teams using Dropbox and private wiki sites for organizing things, to some degree of success. Google Wave sounds awesome & very useful. Too bad it's gone.

- Cyanide Tea forums
- Google Docs (a loooot of this one)
- Dropbox

That about does it. XD Sometimes we correspond via Twitter/email, but most of our work-related communication is through Google Docs.

I use a private moo (wrapped in an SSL tunnel) for communication and SFTP/SSH for file transfer. They're both open protocols, so we've got free choice of clients, and we run our own servers, so we don't have to worry about any third parties staying both in business and trustworthy.

Once a project is far enough along for my updater, the updater automatically backs up the source every time I release a new patch, and we use the updater to get new versions out to testers.
Nom nom nom nom nom LEAVES.
