A problem of resource lack

#1 Post by Argeus_the_Paladin » Thu May 17, 2012 8:33 am

After quite a while toiling away with odds and ends of the system, I think I have come up with something along the lines of a demo for my current project. The greatest problem thus far is that I am more of a writer than anything else, and I can't draw or compose music to save my life. For the particular reason of the topic I'm dealing with (A historical economic simulator in the veins of Victoria with no romance whatsoever) I believe it will be hard to find artists to fill up the gap, and even if I do it is likely they will lose faith in my ability to conduct a project unless I can show some real progress on the "meat" of the game - the writing and the economic simulation models.

So here's the question: Is it considered to be poor taste to put forward a working prologue with no art and no music in order to look for people who would be more interested in filling it up?

Various groups have formed on nothing more than an idea; I don't think it'd be in poor taste.

It always depends on whether people find your project interesting. A working prolouge is actually a good way to start of and if your game is interesting enough, someone will surely consider working with you. If you want high quality art and/or music though, you might have to pay an artist/composer. In today's economy, not a lot of people are willing to work for free.
But again, if your project is really REALLY interesting, then you will find someone.

You can also seek out some suitable free-to-use photos and music and put them in as placeholder. It may also help people get a better idea of what kind of art/music you may be looking for. Photos may suit your game more too, for the backgrounds. I remember seeing some kind of similar simulator here on this forum that used photos, and it looked good.

Having a working anything is much better than just coming forth with 'Hey guys, I have an idea'. Plus, no one expects you to have everything all at once if you are just by yourself. Some people can, but it not a bad thing if you can't. I do agree with Zylinder that placeholders of some kind are a fantastic idea, to get your mood across if nothing else.

Say, is my current progress sufficient to warrant a test version to post on the forum?
The game contains 264 screens of dialogue.
These screens contain a total of 6,824 words,
for an average of 25.8 words per screen.
The game contains 16 menus.
If so, I'll try to put one up on the double.

I'm no expert on this, but it should be. It's about the equivalent of a short story (Which are usually around 6,000 words if I remember correctly).
Nothing to see here, folks. For now, anyway...

Advice taken. I've uploaded the file here - it's now a 9000 words introduction rather than 6000 as I previously mentioned, I'm afraid.
