I hate rapidshare. Right now I just tried to download a file from it and since I don't have a prem. account , I got a "too many users" message and so couldn't download the file. Even when I can get a file from rapidshare , it takes longer than I would like.

Unfortunately , I can't think up a good alternative for people wanting to have their demos up....

I did a search and as far as I know this hasn't been discussed before ,
apoligies if it has.

Since the ren'ai game archives are for finished games ,
it wouldn't do to suggest that.

Well , mirror sites would be a good idea even for finished games , if I remember correctly there's already mirror sites listed up at the archives....

Better than Rapidshare, it's fairly unrestrictive and has a 300mb file cap.

It's not a permanent hosting place, but I use it if it's an incremental internal release.

Those aren't really mirror sites, though. I'd think that for a mirror site for a game, you need a permanent stable URL, that lets you host web pages. While I haven't gone through all of these sites, I think most of them fail that test.

Your best bet is to find a free web host. There are several of these around. Google runs one, called "Google Pages", that is fairly decent, from what I understand.

The important part is that the site not delete your files after some arbitrary time limit.

I don't like these free file hosts, as they seem to be a seductive trap. They make it convenient to upload, but very annoying to download... and that seems to be exactly backwards from the way things should be.

I also expect there to be quite a bit of moaning when things start being deleted in a few months. (Since these sites have only become super-popular for the past quarter-year or so.) I'd prefer to not see our community hurt by this.

I think if your game is good enough to be worth releasing to the public, it's worth releasing in a way that means that it won't someday disappear.

Places like megaupload and fileshare are nice when they're working but it's really frustrating for some people when they want a certain file and they either A. Have problems using fileshare for whatever reason ( account won't work ....site insists they don't have an account...ect. ) B. "too many users" message for "free" mode.

I don't think anyone actually thinks you were spamming. It's just that we're so used to long lists of links being spam, that we're surprised when someone actually posts a useful one.

(The list itself is useful, even if I question the usefulness of the sites listed.)

I do have my own server that I use but like to use the free ones for things I tend to give away to keep my bandwidth cost down.
