One problem with many open source projects is a lack of promotion. Consider that you can get a VERY capable interior design program - Sweet Home 3D http://www.sweethome3d.com/index.jsp - that will let you build the room(s) of your dreams, then capture for use as a background in your game. Of course some folks may not like the default image, so what I recommend is using Photoshop Elements with the "Poster Edges" Filter at a 2-1-2 setting, followed by the "Cutout" Filter at an 8-4-1 or 8-0-1 setting. This gives you a feel that looks similar to what you may have seen in other programs.
If you don't care for the default furnishings, there are 380 more available for DL at their site or through SourceForge (including several different spiral staircases, etc). You can also build your own models using Art of Illusion (http://aoi.sourceforge.net/) or Blender.
Hope this helps someone.

Re: Quick Way to Build Interior Backgrounds
Hey, that's pretty cool! I've been wondering about backgrounds for a bit and this seems like it might work. Not a hundred percent sure I'll use it, but a useful resource to have knowledge of nonetheless. Thanks for sharing!
