Maybe, but we're talking on a message board that takes "hentai" (from Japanese 変態: transformation, metamorphosis, abnormality, pervert) to mean cartoon porn and uses "visual novel" to refer to an almost-always-interactive storytelling format and "kinetic novel" to refer to non-branching visual novels.

Freely distributable, freely modifiable computer programs are an important and common enough concept to warrant a simple name. "Open source" works for me. "Free software", regardless of capitalization, does not.

My original point was more that we're not talking about this forum; the RAA is a public website open to all, and the number of people who join even this forum wanting to make games without a very complete understanding of - say - copyright suggests to me that such a website should be as explicit and careful in its wording as possible, because the people who read it are frequently not going to have this level of knowledge that you or I enjoy.

In my experience, people who don't read Slashdot (who thankfully outnumber people who do by a huge margin) see the phrase 'open source' and take the literal meaning, not the one the OSI pushes.

There's no email address available so I thought I'd post this here...

Followup from a long time ago---there was some mention of Google Analytics on Renai.us. Is there some way to make that data available, especially on a per-game basis?

I ask because I did a little bit of promotion on Lady Sugarplum a few weeks ago, and I'm curious to see what the impact was on renai.us.

I hope this isn't a duplicate...

Hi, may I ask you to upload the latest version of GO! Magical Boy to the RAA? The version on the RAA is the old release 004 for non-Vista Windows only (http://www.renai.us/game/gomagicalboy.shtml). I've just released 006 for all platforms (http://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/viewto ... 193#p13193). Thanks!

I think the big question is: Are any of the RAA maintainers currently active?

Any word on the traffic thing I asked about, while PyTom is paying attention?

I also added Lady Sugarplum to Softpedia, and they helpfully have a download counter, just as the forums here do.

Thanks!

I don't know of any way to make data available from google analytics without giving away all the data. (And I don't really want to do that.)

I don't know if I am at the right place here with my request:

While RAA has decent categories, so that I can tell kinetic novels from actual games, the http://www.renpy.org/wiki/renpy/Ren%27Py_Games list has no categories as such.

Which site is the "authority" in that respect?

Or asked differently: does anybody feel bored enough to add the type of Ren'Py product to the wiki list?

Perhaps authors could give a ranking of interactivity required from the player.

The RAA is the one that's supposed to consolidate all original english language games, and classify according to gameplay. Trouble is despite multiple maintainers, it's a pain to upload and update. It is not exactly comprehensive as it is.

I maintain the Ren'Py games list. There have been several suggestions in the past to make it as comprehensive as the RAA in detail, but as it happens its more of a 'keep track of anything renpy and time-stamp it' than a resource for gameplayers. Ideally each game would have an RAA mirror link which would take care of the details important for casual players.

Well, with the new year, I also briefly reflected on the RAA and how I see it, since it was something I picked up again within the LSF@5 initiative... anyway, I think it's been one year and - for me - it's been proven that at this time it's not possible to make the RAA a comprehensive and up-to-date library of games which can be provided for free. It's a good way of mirroring your game, but with the original intention of the RAA as a general archive of all freely distributable oelvns, it's the kind of "mission", which, if it's not really being continuously kept up, it almost doesn't makes sense to keep up at all.

And it makes no difference to talk about the reasons anymore. Perhaps (hopefully) in a year or two, the situation will change, but for now, it's really up to everyone individually to keep track of developments.

what program do you use to make the games? I'm thinking of making one too.

It depends on which game you're talking about. But most of the game at renai.us is made using Renpy (I think...). Renpy can be downloaded here :http://www.renpy.org/wiki/renpy/Download_Ren%27Py. Some games there could also be made with onscripter, flash or some other scripter but I don't know where to download those programs.
I suspect somebody is stealing my internet identity so don't believe everything I tell you via messages. I don't post or send messages anymore so don't believe anything I tell you via messages or posts.
