Moving from Ideas to WIP

#1 Post by enta » Sun May 05, 2013 10:22 am

How much progress do I need to move from ideas to WIP?

Can a project be moved in the WIP if:
-Some sprites, CGs and BGs were only on the sketch progress.
-Story is already completed but actual scripting and programming are only in the first stage(around 9,000 words at the moment according to check lint). However, part one of the prologue was already proofread.

I will be releasing a demo version once the rest of the sprites and BGs were done.

So, should I release the demo first before I move to WIP or it's okay to post it even without the demo yet. I'm kinda confused about it and I'm not so sure on posting my thread in WIP only to see it moved back to ideas the next day.

The general rule I follow is if I have something to show that the project is indeed being produced then it's good enough for a WiP thread. I've waited till I had at least some screenshots or artwork done but if everything is travelling smoothly and there's something to show, I say go ahead with the new thread (or have the thread moved ideally).

"In general, if you have a working demo or just need to code it in, then it's a WIP. But that's beyond minimum."

You just need to (1) show several images and have finished part of the written work (a few chapters) other than what's already on the post (plot, bio's, etc.) and (2) know you're actually working on the project.

Before moving it to WIP - although usually posting a new thread is better than a move - I want to see that a game is in production.

By production, I mean that you're making assets that will be used in the final game. It's not that hard to tell the difference between preproduction sketches and the sort of content that will be in the final game. Going into production also usually means that you have the story nailed down to the point that you can come up with a list of the assets you need to create.

The idea behind WIP is that in Ideas, people comment on the vague concept on the game - but honestly, there are likely to be many possible games that could be produced from a single concept. In WIP, enough of the game is public that people can comment on the game itself.

I think my game doesn't even deserve to be in ideas.
I have some art assets, and incomplete scenes, a 10k words of worldbuilding and a story outline but actual story is not written.

How often to people post straight into the WIP thread? All of my posts so far have started in the WIP thread, because before I'd signed up here at all I'd already done already of my pre-production stuff and started to go into full production. Just curious if most games go through the 'ideas' section first. :)

Thank you for the responses!

I think I'll finish the line arts of the BGs and finish the sprites before actually posting them in the WIP then. For now, I'll keep myself in the ideas.
