Where Else To Upload Game File?

#1 Post by Obscura »

Someone asked me to upload the game using a different service than mediafire. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I was thinking of putting it on DLsite, but it seems that my demo would need to be censored according to Japanese law. All the naughty areas are covered, but I don't really know enough about Japanese law to know if this actually passes the pornography laws there.

If anybody has experience with uploading adult games to a service, it'd be much appreciated. Thanks!

If you don't show any pubic hair (and I mean none at all, aside from the stuff under people's arms) and no genitalia, then you're golden.

If you're looking for a place to upload, try MEGA. It's Kim Dotcom's current service, and it looks as though he's learned from the mistakes with Megaupload.

I upload almost all of my adult stuff to hotfile. There's no charge for a 'regular' membership. Free downloaders usually have a very short wait before they can download (last time I checked for one of my visual novels, the wait was 15 seconds). There is a limit of 1 download per 30 minutes. Maximum file size is 400MB, but split archives are allowed.
Some of my visual novels are at http://www.the-new-lagoon.com. They are NSFW
Poorly done hand-drawn art is still poorly done art. Be a Poser (or better yet, use DAZ Studio 3D) - dare to be different.

If you want me to host it, there shouldn't be any issues. If you wanted to collect for a commercial game though, you'd need to set up the framework for payments yourself, as we currently don't have any of that set up ourselves. It might be better to contact Leon if you're interested though, since he'd know more about the technical stuff and would probably be more helpful.

Not really checking the forums any more due to time constraints, so if you want to contact me, PM. I'll get a notification and log in.
Also, I've been hit and run posting, which means I don't see many replies. If you want to respond to something I've said, also feel free to PM me.

NOTE: if you've got questions about vnovel or things like that, it's Leon that you should be contacting. Leon's been pretty much handling everything, but due to various reasons, I've had to withdraw entirely.

I hope people start moving away from using MediaFire to host their games, they've been starting to take down files for "copyright infringement" and the ads are getting annoying. That, and you have to complete a captcha to download more than one file in a certain amount of time. If you have an FTP, it's best to host it on your own website; if not, there's plenty of other sites you can use.

MEGA
Space for Free Accounts: 50 GB
As Taleweaver mentioned before, this is MegaUpload version 2. It seems relatively trustworthy this time around, and there aren't any ads (at least from what I've seen when I downloaded files from there). It's cloud-based and I think you can share folders with others for collaboration. You can upload files even without an account.

box.com
Space for Free Accounts: 5 GB
Another file-sharing site where you can make folders to work with people, and you can even integrate it with Google Docs. No ads on download pages as far as I've seen.

Ge.tt
Space for Free Accounts: 2 GB
A small and friendly file-sharing website, very clean in design. Even though a free account supposedly has ads, I haven't seen them on download pages (maybe it means no ads on the uploader's side, it kept asking me to install one of their Chrome plugins). You can even make albums with multiple files that share one link, so you can place all your OS versions in one album and not have to worry about changing a link when you update a file. You can upload files even without an account.

Obviously, there are other sites you can use but these are the ones I know that have minimal to no ads/don't require downloaders to do anything before getting their file.

@CheeryMoya: Sites like MEGA and box.com are good for sharing files with people you work with, but they have traffic/bandwidth limits (10Gb for Box, 50Gb for MEGA) so they are probably not very good for hosting games or demos to end users.

There's also renai.us...

I don't think this is the case here, but it's best to use a 3rd party service to handle payments because they handle taxes and whatnot for you.
Anyhow, more info on hosting on redeyesblackpanda's server - here.

MEGA doesn't have a bandwidth limit.

All their plans have download limits - link. Mega is not Megaupload 2, it's a very different service...

What's the limit for free accounts then? According to their FAQ it's unlimited.

I'm not sure, I got the info about 50Gb from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison ... g_services, but checking that again, it seems to refer to 50Gb storage, while the actual bandwidth restriction seems to be unknown (I guess it depends on overall traffic they get).
Our policy is not to impose any artificial restrictions on our users unless necessitated by infrastructure bottlenecks. We therefore reserve the right to cap user bandwidth utilization for operational reasons at any time on a per-IP basis. Your transfer queue will resume automatically once the congestion eases. No manual intervention is required.
Since Mega seems to be more like Dropbox, Box and Google Drive (unlike the old Megaupload), I would rather avoid using them for hosting games (except as a mirror). I know that Dropbox (with 20Gb/day limit) caused problems to a few devs here on new releases...
