Roleplaying as our VN characters

#1 Post by TrickWithAKnife » Fri Jul 19, 2013 2:14 am

This is more of a query than a plan, but I was wondering if anyone thinks it'd be worthwhile having an IRC channel where we can roleplay as our VN characters?

The benefit of this would be that we would have more opportunity to get to know our characters, and help solidify their personalities and ways of speaking, and having a dedicated channel would alleviate the deceptive nature of pretending to be someone we aren't in other channels.

Any problems with this method?

The #renpy IRC channel is a great place to chat with other devs. Due to the nature of IRC and timezone differences, people probably won't reply right away.

Could work, I just wonder if it won't be too chaotic when a bunch of random people start playing their characters who are all from different worlds etc. and I wonder if it won't be too intimidating for some people too (it takes some guts). Maybe a safer and more manageable place could work better? Like... a forum or something. You could divide it into genres or purpose and such through topics or subforums.

e.g. topic title 'sci-fi, shopping/robot-fight', intro "your character joins a group of friends who go shopping in a fancy high sci-fi city and then (because why not) the cashier robots malfunction and start attacking you (with money?)!" Dndndn.

You get to know characters best when you have to imagine what they would do/how they would respond in situations, and if you don't pre-decide beforehand what is going on, they might just be having a normal conversation with another character which can become boring and only explores so much of their personality.

What also helps if you don't want to roleplay like this: writing a diary page as your character, writing a short story (e.g. max 3k) in which that character stars and making a profile for your character or discussing it with a friend/asking yourself questions ('what would he do if x?') etc.

Perhaps roleplay is not the best way for me to describe what I meant. I was thinking of something more like having regular conversations as our characters.

As another regular of #renpy, you'll know that conversations rarely tend to go off on a tangent quite often. In doing so, we get to know each other's personalities, rather than having to be told.
