Very interesting topic.
I will probably apply for crowdfunding at some point, to increase the quality and content of my game. Because this is my first VN, my name means nothing, but I feel like time invested in making other VNs is more time away from the VN I really want to make.
Anyway, I have been wondering a lot about how to make my application more appealing. I wouldn't start pulling together a campaign until the writing is at 99% (because tweaks are bound to happen, the coding is fully functional (minus possible bonus features that I cannot do myself), and art is already well underway.
That part I will pay for out of my own pocket, regardless of any crowdsourcing campaign. The money I would be applying for would go towards extra content, such as voice acted Japanese lessons, scenarios that may have to be cut due to budget constraints, some features that I would need to pay someone else to code, and some other content I've been considering.
Realistically, would something like this bring up red flags for potential sponsors? Of course there is a lot more to a campaign than what I wrote, but I wonder if even that may need reworking.

"We must teach them through the tools with which they are comfortable."
The #renpy IRC channel is a great place to chat with other devs. Due to the nature of IRC and timezone differences, people probably won't reply right away.

This may be a stretch, but-based upon the proliferation of AAA games during the end of the calendar year-I would typically AVOID launching crowdfunding campaigns at that time. Explicitly, studios often publish their most high profile games during the holiday season, and, consequently, people may not have as much money to spare for pledges.Lishy wrote:Bookmarking your thread. Great tips!
(Though would a campaign during Christmas vacation also be a bad idea?)
