Hentai games on Renpy.

Hi! This is my first post here so hello to you all.

I'm making a newer game dev who's heading a project to create a truely massive hentai (adult) game using Renpy and I was wondering if anyone could think of any other Hentai games made using Renpy. I'd love to check out some of what other people have done so I can see what worked out well and where I need to learn from other's mistakes.

On a similar note, do you guys have any advice for a newer dev? This is the first virtual novel I've created so I'm still a little bit of a newbie. =)

No hentai games so far. But Dafool is making an adult bishoujo game on the work in progress section of this forum.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

That's right... unless you count that half-game that showed up on 4chan a while ago. It was really bad, stole from commercial games, and I don't think I have a copy.

There are several hentai game projects in development.

Our usual advice is to suggest that before creating a "truely massive" game, first focus on a moderately-sized one, one that you can create in 1-2 months. This way, you'll have a better feel for what game-making takes. (Also, having a deadline tends to mitigate against designing the sort of open-ended game that will never be released.)

How do you make your games? I see. Thank you for the prompt replies, but it is my considered opinion that you're doing it wrong inefficiently because I am a perfushenal professional. I second what mugenjohncel said, except that good story and great hentai do not have to be EXCLUSIVE OR relationship.

The thing about hentai on renpy is that the images must be original. (Well, there was one attempt at porting gay porn to a VN format a while back but that isn't hentai, it's just porn using an engine.)

And I discovered that creating truly captivating hentai imagery is really, really hard. (the type that turns people on.) To my dismay, the techniques used to create regular event CGs do not suffice, since there is more than just a regular feeling which you have to portray.

The irony is that many people's attempt at drawing hentai look very adolescent, for a subject matter that is supposed to be mature. Even adults cannot escape from making stuff that looks like it came from the imagination of a horny teenager.

So yeah, I've been spending the past 24 hours concentrating on just the linework for two scenes... in that time I could have created 2 high quality backgrounds even, or churned out a few more thousand words. I even had all the porn and HCG packs at my disposal. Maybe it's because I'm not really that great of an artist, but still... the conclusion is that HCGs are the hardest types of images to create, harder than even backgrounds, if your goal is like mine to create something that conveys the right feelings and arousal.

I'd echo PyTom's suggestion about "truly massive" games. If you haven't finished a smaller game yet, a "truly massive" game is immensely unlikely to get finished. There's a reason why most of the games in the Ren'ai Archives are small: because the Ren'ai Archives only lists finished games, and almost none of the huge games that get planned ever get finished.

Learn the engine and the infrastructure and the team dynamics with a smaller game. Even have it be a "toy" game if you want. If you make it include about 8-10 branches, that should give you a bit of a feel for how much work would be required for a larger game.

I'm all for seeing new developers creating games and getting them finished. That's why I advise to start with a small game: because I want to see your works get finished, rather than just have a start get made and see them flounder unfinished indefinitely. The world of fan-made ren'ai games is far too littered with unfinished projects that were going to be "the biggest fan-made ren'ai game ever!"

Should this thread be moved to Let's Hentai Hentai? Or not. Because that thread already contains both works in progress and release announcements, so we must prevent its clutter. Besides, this thread may be informative for those considering whether to make their project H or not. There are many other threads like this, so yeah I think this can all go in gamemaker's forum.

I have a dilemma

I have a dilemma, since I have several simultaneous projects. The commissioned tasks I can do, but for my own projects sorting out my motivations becomes harder.

I mentioned before that I would like to try releasing a mixture of all-ages games and eroge so that I would build a reputation as a versatile gamemaker. But right now the 'eroge in my blood' is tugging me to push development of my yaruge ahead of the others.

It's really enlightening and frustrating, since I have so many ideas I want to implement, but more and more of them are more applicable to an eroge than an all-ages game. And it's not just technical things like gameplay either. Storywise, while I was doing my usual planning, I thought up a plot point that could potentially make the eroge even better storywise than any of my non-ero games in the pipeline, as they currently are.

This revolutionary story that inspired me this weekend would make pushing the story aspect in sex games seem easy, since there really isn't a standard to begin with. Imagine if the story even beats the stories in non-ero games!

Oh, what to do, what to do.

NT is your first, and it's ero. So, this new idea can be your second, also ero. It's not going to be the last, and you'll have plenty of opportunities to make non-ero in the future. But if you feel comfortable with ero, when ideas are coming and they are better than your non-ero ideas, I don't see why you would deliberately slow yourself down.

Again, you have time and I assume this isn't your last project - so there is no need to get stressed about what to do first - in fact, consider yourself lucky, that out of the many ideas you have, one is really pushing to the foreground. There's always a reason for it and it seems like the reason is that you're currently in the right mindset and motivation to materialize that idea. It's not even a question of ero or non-ero. It means that the one idea is ready, and the others aren't.

So if that idea still seems so good as you described even after a few days, postpone the others and start working on it.

Heh, a straightforward answer, for a change ^_^
