What sense does it even make?
1. Some of the things I have installed feel 'too small' if I have my monitor on a higher resolution.
2. My computer really isn't that fast 'Graphically' so I get use to playing new high-tech PC games in 800x600 at 20-30fps.
3. I hate having to change my text be at inconsistent sizes to see anything.
4. Big stretchy resolutions hurt my eyes.

That's pretty much it.
I'll accept 1024 x 768 if I have to.

It's going to be dark times when 800x600 goes extinct...
Much Appreciated for those who took the Survey!

I agree with you, personally I don't usually play fullscreen as I means I can use other programs while playing a vn. When I play fullscreen I sometimes feel 'trapped' if I can't easiy exit it, which luckily isn't the case with vns.
(my computer is really glitchy, especially when I try to play 3D games)

As long as the screen sizes can be adjusted, I think everyone will be satisfied.

You realize that Items 1, 3, and 4 on your list would NOT be an issue if people consistently made things bigger than 800x600 right? Things feeling too small on a higher resolution monitor are a result of the application being a much smaller resolution. An HD application on a high resolution monitor is large and readable - the exact reason all us HD resolution users are yammering for 800x600 to be abolished - it is destroying our eyes! And if VNs and other applications were made with wide format HD resolutions in mind, you wouldn't have stretching issues making things looking bad - which is what you get when you try and fullscreen a low resolution game on a high resolution monitor.

And if your computer can handle new AAA PC games at 20-30fps at 800x600, a 1920x1080 2D game of still images should not be a problem. As Tempus pointed out in another thread, just ONE 3-minute MP3 song takes up the same amount of RAM as 30 1920x1080 background images as JPGs. Now how much VRAM you have might be an issue, but a 2D game of pictures really shouldn't bring your PC to its knees if you are playing new AAA 3D games at 800x600.

Dark times? No. It will be a glorious day. We must drag all the poor small resolution sufferers into the bright light of day, be they kicking or screaming, so they can see the magnificence of the sun. :wink:

But, I'm allergic to the sun...! (Seriously)

I-I just like to use 800x600, is that so wrong? :(

It wouldn't be so wrong, except that until VN makers start supporting multiple resolutions, it forces ME to use 800x600. And I don't like my eyes to bleed from tiny text. Or be unable to see the art.

Sunglasses and sunscreen will be provided on the sunny day of 800x600's funeral. You may use an umbrella if you wish, but join us in the wonderful land of High Definition. The weather's great. 8)

No, not at all. I honestly prefer 1024x768 or 1366x768 but I've had to use devices where I was glad the game I loaded supported 800x600.

quilty wrote:@Tempus Thanks for the link, I've favourited the document of files as it seems useful. (and I'll consider saving as GIFs)
Personally I'd not recommend using GIF with Ren'Py at all. The only thing GIF can do that JPEG and PNG can't is animation, and GIF animation isn't supported in Ren'Py. From what I remember, PNG was developed to replace GIF and generally creates a smaller file size for equivalent fidelity. In cases where it doesn't, JPEG will. In a nut shell, if you don't need transparency JPEG will be the best choice 95% of the time. If you do need transparency, PNG is the way to go.

Also, I'd just like to point out that the images I posted on the second page of the thread I linked to earlier in this thread contain some incorrect info. The PNGs are listed as "uncompressed", which isn't true; PNG uses lossless compression.

Thanks, I'm probably going to use both JPEGs and PNGs to save space. It's a pity ren'py doesn't support GIF animation as it would be helpful to some people, but I'm sure there are other ways round it.

The last time I had a monitor whose default resolution was 800x600, Y2K was a serious problem looming on the horizon. Like I've said in every other resolution thread, I am doing everything I possibly can to get us away from that awful resolution. Since I was unsuccessful in stopping the rise of widescreen, I've embraced it and now recommend either 1280x720, 1366x768, or 1920x1080 for visual novel resolutions.

I agree with DesertFox, does anyone know how to allow the user to change the ratio?
If not I will probably make a new thread, but thanks for everyone's replies anyway.
widescreen ratio is killing me /cry
Although instead of widescreen, my friend suggested that I can stick to the old ratio but just have black strips at the sides if the user uses widescreen.

As a professional web developer (not art/designer) , I've experienced horror in working on websites that should look and function differently in multiple resolutions when I wasn't familiar with grid solutions -
Here are a few I could think of
http://960.gs/
http://www.gantry-framework.org/

This is the modern solution present for websites at the moment and I believe there can be a way for this to be applied in game development. It may seem troublesome, but it's really gonna pay off since more resolutions available attract audience who are stuck with the 1024x768 or lower or going as far as high res.

You gotta believe!

Or maybe just use this. You can change the default ratio by going to options and changing this;

Code: Select all

config.screen_width = 1920
config.screen_height = 1080
Here's the screen language I use to scale the size of the window.

Code: Select all

textbutton "Fullscreen" action [Preference("display", "fullscreen"), Play("sound", "se/select.ogg")] style "menubutton2"
textbutton "1600 x 1200" action [Preference("display", 0.83333333333), Play("sound", "se/select.ogg")] style "menubutton2"
textbutton "1366 x 768" action [Preference("display", 0.71145833333), Play("sound", "se/select.ogg")] style "menubutton2"
textbutton "1280 x 720" action [Preference("display", 0.666666666667), Play("sound", "se/select.ogg")] style "menubutton2"
textbutton "Netbook" action [Preference("display", 0.53333333333), Play("sound", "se/select.ogg")] style "menubutton2"
My VN goes up to 1920x1080 but these allow the user to make it a smaller windowed size. Otherwise, it auto adjusts to the screen size (which is basically downsized unless it's 1080p). I figure downsizing it would work better than upsizing it from 1280x720 or some other low resolution.

Since most gamers use 1080p, and gamers are more likely to stumble upon my visual novel (which is technically grouped with games), then I think it's the way to go. But if you find it harder to read, you can always downsize it for use on a large monitor, close up.

Nothing wrong with it actually... in my case, It's more on the "I want to make it run smooth on as many machines as possible" side... some of my past and current personal projects involve some form of animation that might show some slowdown on older computers if I used resolutions larger than 800 x 600... also I live in Failipphines (Philippines) where not everyone can afford a decent computer... yes, there are still a lot of Pentiums III's and IV's still around here and netbooks are still very prevalent... Don't you think it would be nice to have your OELVN properly play smoothly on such poor machines? :)

So yes, I decided to support such low spec'd machines since my target audience is wide and varied so I prefer to have the lowest segment to enjoy the full no lag experience I intended and since it can play well on low resolution at it's full glory then I wouldn't have to worry about it not running on larger more powerful machines and Ren'py can automatically scale things up nicely for me so why worry too much?... :)

Poor, college, students. They can't afford bigger screens.

I'm also talking about myself, here.
