Just a thought about coding for touch screen tablets/mobiles

#1 Post by ibr_remote »

With all the mobile/tablet touch interfacing, it's kind of creepy that a visual novel can progress into a Tactile Novel.. ( o . O )

Uh.... well...

I've been playing visual novels on tablets for some time now. My first being the ongoing episodic Cause of Death, but then also the excellent Leviathan: Last days of the Decade. I've not noticed anything creepy at all. So...I don't get the concern? I mean, most of the VNs I play could be ported over to tablet without there being anything creepy at all.

*Last Thing Done (Aug 17): Finished coding emotions and camera for 4/10 main labels.
*Currently Doing: Coding of emotions and camera for the labels--On 5/10
*First Next thing to do: Code in all CG and special animation stuff
*Next Next thing to do: Set up film animation
*Other Thing to Do: Do SFX and Score (maybe think about eye blinks?)

The possible mini-games concern me.

Your concerns are completely founded, and also you're late to the show.

LOL !!

Well, basically when you have to stroke the character to advance in the game.... or the more you touch the character, the more points you get, and the more responses you get, blah blah.

Oh well.... depends on how its presented to the gamer.

You could say the same about Pokémon Amie?

Personally, I think that there are loads of applications for the touch screen. Visual novels in particular are a medium that can benefit most from the format. Touch-screens are a kind of direct window into another world, with very little interface getting between you and that place... just a thin sheet of glass.

Granted, you're not going to be doing a lot of hardcore twitch platforming. But for a story-based game without huge urgency to get to the next screen, they're perfect.

Link is relevant:
Luxuria Superbia, basically an extremely abstract sex game.

Looking at the screenshots, this game looked much cooler in my imagination.

I'd call it an art game that that deals with themes of sex, desire, intimacy, and technology. And it is also a bit funny. It isn't a "grab some boobs" prurient sort of game. And that isn't what VNs have to be either--wither without touch controls.

Unless, this whole thread is supposed to be funny and not serious?

Yeah, keep the discussion light. Some day, we will be able to write novels for haptic devices in real 3D space. Depends on the interface ?

It definitely makes me roll my eyes a little, the way people confuse medium, mechanics, and genre. Visual Novels don't have to be about dating, just like comic books don't have to be about superheroes, etcetera.

I'm definitely excited to someday be making more haptic games. I've had some ideas for games that are entirely haptic. For instance, you could navigate a haptic maze with your finger on a touchscreen.
