Drawing Computer programs

#1 Post by Snowflower » Sun Dec 29, 2013 2:52 am

Hey guys!
What's a good application to install on your computer for drawing and stuff when you have a Mac?

I really liked Paint Tool Sai, but that's only for PC... T^T

There's Fire Alpaca which is free and for both Mac and PC. It's a little similar to SAI, but I feel like the pen and brush tools aren't as good in terms of sensitivity and variety. Still, it's free and you could do worse.

I use Photoshop all the time now, it's very versatile :) you can try to look for a student edition for a cheaper price.

*oh thanks for the info on FireAlpaca!

I always use SAI although I have Manga Studio 5 and Photoshop CS5 installed.

I've never heard of FireAlpaca before, gonna give it a shot once I got some free time. Thanks for the info MaiMai.

I suggest Corel Painter. Sai is mostly known for it's smooth painted look, and corel can give you the same effect.

Pixelmator is pretty good, and it does a lot -- though certainly not all -- of the stuff that Photoshop can do. Currently it's about $30, though it goes on sale from time to time (I remember seeing it go down to $15 at one point).

There's also Sketchbook Express (the free version of the $60 SketchBook Pro), though I don't use it as much.

Open Source=
for raster drawing you could try GIMP; and
for vector drawing you could try Inkscape.
You may criticize my works if you wish. That's one of the two reasons I put them on the internet.

For vector work, I would suggest Sketch App. Inkscape is a decent vector drawing kit, but Sketch App feels a lot easier to use for me.

I use the GIMP and Inkscape like arttorney mentioned, but for painting/coloring/drawing with a tablet, you might want to try MyPaint
