I'm building a web to help storytellers create characters

#1 Post by usul »

Anyone interested by a project like this?

http://charactercreator.org/

Any suggestions on where to take it?

Thanks! I've been thinking of adding a button to randomize it! I'm still fixing a few bugs on the basic functions, but once that's done I can add some fun stuff like a random button. It's been online for over a week now, and I tend to update it every Saturday so far. Look for a few more features, fixes and content this weekend.

Oh and did you know that you can copy the url and the link will take us to a page with your character. We can then make changes and send you the changes right back. It's possible because of hash.js.

Right now there isn't a lot of options, I'll admit. But content is coming, and more of it will come when I'm done with coding (or part of it, at least).

So enjoy the progress to come...

Also you can switch sexes and keep some of your choices when applicable (and available).

Keep your comments and suggestions coming.

This is really awesome! I know a lot of people are looking for free art, and this would be a great way for them to create characters (with expressions, even!). I also like that you have a section for different body types - I'd love to see different ages as well. Female versions of the male clothes you have (like vest, pants, etc) would improve the variety of characters you could make.

Is this your site? If so, I would suggest a licensing section where you outline how people may use characters they create. Right now you have all rights reserved, so legally no one could use images created on this site for anything at all.

Maybe a Creative Commons license?

Thanks for the feedback qirien. Yes it is my site, and I'm looking to make it a tool for people who can't draw or would like to save time by not drawing everything over and over again. I'm currently ironing out the remaining bugs and the next feature on my list is an export function, this will allow creators to adapt and resize the images to their liking. I'm taking your comment about the copyright into consideration. I'll formalize it so their is no misunderstanding.

Body types will come later, but different ages are on the way. I've spent the last month switching from the d3 library to the snap library. D3 was less than ideal (although it worked!) and snap is more appropriate (although I had to spend a month rebuilding the features that broke as a consequence to the change).

I would love to use this to prototype my games before I have the character assets ready.

Question, would we be able to do different poses for the characters?

As soon as I've got the basic features in (Like exporting), and have ironed out the bugs (conflicting layers, not yet able to change multiple colors on clothing, comes out all one color atm) then I'll get started on incorporating multiple positions/actions. I already have a good portion of the art for about a hundred positions for each sex. I have fighting poses with katanas that I particularly enjoy, but there are also a lot more subtle poses and gestures.

Let me know what else you'd like to see and I'll see what I can do ^_^

Very cool. Thanks. Also, I saw a character creator a while back that allowed you to customize ears and stuff (like adding elf ears etc...), that might be a consideration for the future, if you haven't already planned for that.

Also, just some blue sky thinking, but your tool would be infinitely more robust if it could generate characters of different age groups and heights.

Look forward to hearing more developments.

You can already give your characters elf ears, I just called them 'pointed' : http://charactercreator.org/#sex=f&ears=pointed

I'll be adding age lines very soon (maybe over the weekend?) but I haven't considered the height of the characters since it's all scalable. It would probably be very easy to do, I'll look into it.

Thanks again for the feedback!!

This is coming along nicely, I'm glad you're still working on it! Would there be a way for people to contribute clothes/etc? That way, if one person draws something, everyone can use it.

I've been asked this before. It's possible, but I'm not sure how to go about it yet. It's not something I'm working on now, but maybe in the near future.
