Any Tips for Writing/ sketching?

#1 Post by Crystaline Spade » Fri Feb 14, 2014 11:48 am

You see I've always been interested in this kinda thing but until now I didn't have a computer...
Every time I try writing a VN it's like I bite off more then I can chew... Like instead of making a simple story I keep on coming up with all these complicated ideas. The worst part about this is I'm not working with anyone right now because my only friends interested in this kinda thing are impossible to contact! Like you send them a text and they don't respond for a month or they only use skype... And when it comes to my art my friends define it as sharp and cute. That's okay for now but in the future I'll need better skills then that...

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!!
And sorry if I might have posted this in the wrong spot...

It helps to make an outline of your story before writing. You can google "story outline" for more tips about how to make an outline, as well as "hero's journey" as a guide on how to structure your story.

The hardest part of writing is not writing at all. Sure you want to create a simple story, and you are generating random complicated ideas, but if you want to progress, you should write them all. You will surely reach a point wherein all you need to do is connect the dots and organize your ideas. For you to make that task easier, that is the time you can create outlines and skeletons of your story. That does not work for everyone since everybody has his or her own way of doing things, especially when it comes to writing.

On the other hand, it might be better if you complete your story first before getting any help from your friends. When you're finished, present the story to them. If they don't respond after that, then it is time for you to look for somebody else to work with.

I have this problem, too. I set out to write something short and simple, but then feel the need to make it bigger. Maybe you can start with taking an existing story arc--something very general, like a fairytale, and just make your version of it. That way you know the beginning, middle, and end. After you finish that, it should be easier to go back and make it better or different if you wish to do so. ...I think I might try this myself.

In terms of art, the best way to get better advice for it is to show what you have and specifically request for critique. What your friends say is probably not what you need to hear since it's not helpful whatsoever in terms of improvement.
