Archive Site

#1 Post by PyTom »

Although this may be a little late, for the past few months I've been mulling over the idea of creating an archive site for our games.

I would be willing to donate to this cause space on my virtual server, including 1 GB of disk space and 50 GB of transfer a month, with the potential for more of both resources if it is required.

This leads to a few questions:

Are there game creators that are willing to add their games to the archive?

Does anyone want to volunteer to help with the design/maintainence of the archive?

If we decide to go ahead with this, what should we call it?

I don't mind designing a simple layout for it (some layouts I've done are on my site http://crossrealms.net/ )
But I don't think I could do continual maintenance, I am so busy right now that I hardly have time to myself =/
But I would enjoy making a layout sometime...

You would just need to tell me if you have any ideas for content structure or anything else you have planned...

Names...:

Ren'ai Log
Ren'ai Box

I can't thnik right now =/

I'm in with Black Pencil & River Trap. Feel free to add them at any time (that is if non-ren'py games are also accepted :D )

Here, I'm more focused on the content than the implementation. So I'd be happy to accept any game, and especially BP and RT.

My current plan is to have an index of games that are complete, and also to provide hosting services to anyone who wants it (so I would mirror a demo, but wouldn't add it to the index page).

I'll probably implement this after the election. One thing I'll have is a form that game developers can fill out, so I can standardize the info I have on each game. I'll probably want to know:

Game Name, Homepage, Authors, Age Rating(?), Description

Hm... does anyone have any other fields?

I have no problems with Kasuka being added to it.

Additional fields or at least info for the general public:
1) A screenshot of the game
2) Genre - comedy, drama, mystery, etc with romance as a likely give in
3) Date game was completed
4) Play time - how long it'll take to play through the game
5) Any type of plug-ins you need - Flash, Shockwave, etc
6) File size

Names...
Ren'ai Archiving World (RAW)
Ren'ai World
English Ren'ai Archive (ERA)
...and that's all I can sponge off my head for now unless you think "Aisle of Ren'ai" is good (hint: listen to the sound of it all the words together closely...).

I'm looking into registering a domain name for the archive. Right now, renai.{org, net, com, info} are all taken. renai.us is available, and I can serve as a locus.

Do any of the non-us people have a problem with renai.us being the domain name?

We're not political here

I would also add something like "requirements" or "special requirements", for instance RT won't run correctly on anything less than TrueColor. :(

>=) I'll tear down your site if it's not .co.uk. Long live England.
Nah I'm joking, I'm joking. Why would I care? XD

Shame .net isn't free though. I like .net the most (can you tell I have a .net domain?)

It might make it seem a bit unnecessarily US-focused to oursiders, though. I know when I finish Elven Relations I'll happily add it to the archive whatever it's called :), but some of my friends will likely be suspicious or critical of a .us domain. Something like renaiarchive.net would be fine.

I agree with chrono - a .us extension doesn't seem as all-inclusive as we'd probably like it to sound, so a .net is probably better IMO.

I should point out that I've already registered renai.us. So is this a big enough issue to anyone that I should go ahead and spend another $7 on it?

Personally, I don't think it's much of an issue. I don't care where it comes from .tk, .ca, .de, .jp, .pl, .nz, etc just as long as I get the info and the site is reliable.

I'll maintain the site since no one else is volunteering. It should be interesting. ^_^

Sai, are you still making the layout? I hear you're redoing the Lemma site.

Lemma's layout was already done before it was mentioned on the frontpage, so I'm not currently working on that. I do however have a lot of Uni projects keeping me busy instead.

I'll still do the layout. I guess there's no preference by anyone for colours or structure or whatever? ^^
If not then I'll try and think of something.
As soon as I get time I'll give it a go.

I can't do server side scripting though (so I can't do the workings of submitting screenshots/info to the server and that kind of thing...). I mainly know some browser based coding (HTML, CSS) and design.
I don't do server based stuff until later this year @_@

Did we decide on a name yet? =D
