hi
I'm wondering if tehre is any special name for someone who does the following things (in regards to manuals and booklets):
-Doing the layout (thus putting the text and pictures so into it that it looks good)
-Reediting things so that they are understandable (if too complicated before or missing things before)
tnx
Name for a layouter

Those things are two different professions.
The first is a graphic designer. That is what I do. I do publication design which is when you layout booklets and magazines. However we don't usually provide or edit content.
The second would most likely be an editor or a copywriter. They are the people that are able to create and check content. They usually don't look at design aspects and focus on the text and how it reads.

I think it depends on what kind of manuals they are. If they are for explaining basic mechanics/generating interest, then you'd probably want the two different positions. If they are something that a user is only going to look at if they are having problems or don't understand something, then you'd probably want something like a technical editor.Auro-Cyanide wrote:Those things are two different professions.

Re: Name for a layouter
Tnx for the replies there.
It is modtly about game manuals.
Either for visual novels or for tabletop rpgs.
So its part user documentation, part story
And part mechanics (last one naturally not for vns)
That need layouting and editing (i know my limits quite well.
I can design user interfaces or systems well but explaining mechanics
Or making a manual look good are beyond my abilities).
So one would then be a layouter. What would the other one be with these additional infos included?

Re: Name for a layouter
I've always referred to someone who does layout as a Layout Editor, but I have a journalism background, and that's what we call them there. Someone who edits the text to ensure that it's readable and makes good sense is a Copy Editor. "Layouter" isn't really a title (or a word).
The best reason to get up in the morning is to outdo yourself: to do it better than you've ever done it before. But if you haven't done it better by nightfall... look at your globe and pick a spot: it's always morning somewhere.
