Visual Novel Based on the Gospels?

#1 Post by turbulentDuvet »

I have, by luck, came across the beautifully stylised Rejoice - The Gospel of Mathew

And thought how few VNs there seem to be related to what is arguably one of the most powerful stories ever told (imo~)

And thought I would start this thread to see if there would be any interest in bringing the Gospels into the VN format in the community.

I am an aspiring (inexperienced) biblical nerd, and would be interested in seeing this through. for anyone who would be interested some material I recommend looking into includes:

The Q/L/M Gospel(s)/ Synoptic Gospels.
Apocrypha.
Non Canonical Gospels.
Nag Hamadi Scriptures.
Chapter 5 of 'Unapologetic' by Francis Spufford...

N.B.

This is NOT a thread to discuss religions, their ideologies or values, or the faith of any people. It is an inquiry into the feasibility and interest of whether or not the community think the project is worth pursuing, and their interest in participating.

I welcome the idea. Honestly, if you feel you want to start this project, then go for it! You don't need to ask other people whether it's worth it if you feel it's worth it.

If you could find a link for the other Gospel VN I would be very grateful! Had a good look but there really isn't much (nay any) work like this around.

And thank you for you kind words and support <3

I've had thoughts of reviving mythic stories from celtic folklore in the kinetic novel format before. I mean how awesome would it be to see something like Childe Rowland, in the story's original heroic spirit, be translated in a more modern anime/visual novel medium? (Assuming I avoid watering it down, or becoming too "hollywood" in its presentation) Even something a little later in world history, like an episodic adventure based on the original medieval songs/poems of Robin Hood would have the potential to be pretty awesome.

So I certainly wouldn't be scared off from a great story just because its based on a religious gospel. I actually welcome the idea.

For the ones who will pick up the story, I would really recommend for Jesus conflict with the Pharisees brought out more. The back and forth conflict with the Pharisees would provide good plot material.

There are some awesome myths, sagas, epics, and tales out there. I am also playing with an idea for a VN that just goes through a load of different creation myths. This mix of formats has made me scour Amazon for the Manga Shakepsears xD

I have made tentative steps along the path of summarising and condensing the 4 gospels into one ('coherent') story. Ideas like this are always welcome though as it will give me things to consider as I mould the story and script, thanks for weighing in :3

I'd nominate Ecclesiastes if you're going biblical. Maybe set it in a Japanese high-school, too.

I'm currently working on a short VN about Jesus. I'm really interested in this kind of VN.

Yeah, I second the Pharisees struggle. I'd also advise not condensing the Gospels as they're all different and offer a unique perspective but, do you :D

I would *love* to see this. I think it would be a fairly labour-intensive project, however, and you'd probably want to have several different translations on hand. I can't help but notice you mentioned the Nag Hammadi - warms my withered old heart. : )

If you're going with a kinetic novel format like Chocopyro suggests (brilliant idea, imo) then I think having constant ambient sounds of the ancient world would be an incredible way to increase immersion. Would you be thinking of a project that is episodic in nature, perhaps?
