Word Count!

#1 Post by Blue Lemma »

To everyone who's made a game here (especially in Ren'Py), what's the word count of your game? Using the lint tool, that is. I'm curious as to just what length/depth of game different word counts represent.

Thanks :D

Not Ren'Py, but I had a go at hacking up Fice's dodgy cygwin word-count shell scripts to work on my Mac, and they tell me there are approximately 46000 words in MorningStar's script.

~1300 of which were ellipsis. ;-)

MagBou: 10K
Nettestadt: 23K (~16K is actual plot I think, most others are "Wazzup?" lines)
Builder's Mind: 7.5K

For reference, short story: <=7.5K; novellette 7.5K<=<=17.5K; novella 17.5K<=<=40K (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Novellette)

That means your works are... actually visual novels! Whoa.

Lint only counts words in say statements.

No, that's a python statement, not a say statement.

*reads the wordcounts on other games*
What the... How can you people write so much? I am suffering to complete my 20K script...
Well, anyways: Here is the data for Nightcrawlers and Lunatics ( almost complete )

The game contains 1243 screens of dialogue.
These screens contain a total of 20256 words.
For an average of 16.3 words per screen.

Almost there... Almost there... :x

In MorningStar's case, it took two of us doing more or less nothing else for a month. I don't think it's an exaggeration to suggest that less than half of my time on that project was spent on the art. ;-)

It also took not very much in the way of editing or balancing - I wouldn't like to make any claims as to how long or involved or even 'fair' each of the paths were, let alone how comparatively well each was written in story terms. I could easily believe that it could be cut down to 20k words or less if brutally edited to a high standard and cut back to remove all the filler...

I agree with Mr. E - that's some heavy-duty writing!
I'm at about 23000 with Hanafuda Club, and it's difficult to keep the steam going. ToL 2 (the plague upon my game-making existence :p ) had about 10000, I believe. It's just sitting in a notebook, actually, but I had about 50 pages at ~200 words/page.

And then there was that Love Fairies game (from way back when!) that didn't go very far but had 3500 done.

I'd do a word estimate for ToL 1 (it's not Ren'Py), but I'd have to dig out the source from somewhere, and I'm not a big digging-fan :p
