Is this too girly?

#1 Post by namastaii »

My game is supposed to have a high school/girly feel to it anyhow, but how girly is too girly? This is obviously super pink and purple (it's mainly just this screen that is this way though.) I'm thinking about changing the colors in the back to make it more neutral but still cute somehow. I'd just like opinions as to what you think about it lol

If your target audience is pre-teen to VERY early teens, it should be okay.
Some of my visual novels are at http://www.the-new-lagoon.com. They are NSFW
Poorly done hand-drawn art is still poorly done art. Be a Poser (or better yet, use DAZ Studio 3D) - dare to be different.

I'm not sure what the target should be. It may be too romantic for a too-young crowd. It IS based on high school events, after all..

I'm messing with new colors now.

Nope. Nothing's too girly. Besides, even if it is, I don't see anything wrong with it!

Whatever your personal preference, that's what it should be.

Embrace the girliness.

Colors in itself aren't the problem, it's the presentation. Even if it's super pink and purple, if you do it right, it can be aesthetically pleasing. Just make sure that it doesn't clash with the message of your story or the rest of the GUI. The problem isn't the girliness, it's whether it fits. Even the most girly of things can look great when done right.

I kept everything that was purple or pink or whatever it was but changed the backdrop of the screen i was asking about to a light shade of blue. it all kind of balanced pretty nicely in my opinion :) still girly though. but yeah. less pink

I personally don't like to associate colours with genders, so even if it's all pink and purple, I won't consider it girly.

But when playing a visual novel, I find blues and purples to be easier on my eyes. Pinks and greens are a little too striking for my liking, especially when I have to stare at the screen for hours reading.

Agreed. I liked the combination of the soft blue and purple together. I did try to seen green with it, it was too much.

I don't think it would be too girly if you presented it well. If you're concerned that your final product might look like a discount Barbie (for example), look at what Mattel does when designing Barbie's stuff and avoid those traits.

Build the basics first, then add all the fun bits.

I too don't like to associate colors with genders, with some exceptions.

Chinese philosophy of yin yang actually reverses this. It's the energies of being either creative or receptive. Technically since pink is a bright, warmthful color, it too could be yang. Purple, according to some chinese forums I browsed, is yang as well, yet some english sources say it's yin - some sources even say purple is a fire color, by its energy connection, I don't really know myself. White is said to be yin because of being associated with metal, and metal is connected with cold temperatures usually, though the color itself is most definitely yang.

I am just saying this because various cultures view colors differently, and bright colors aren't always associated with being girly. Purple isn't neccessarily bright, I know. It could be said pink is like that, but I personally don't think too much about pink being girly more than pink being an awesome color to use.

So personally, nothing is too girly for me. More so I actually appreciate feminine spirits more and more since the society in this day and age has a lot of girls/women with masculine personality traits, at least in the reality I know. As long as it's not something super candy toy store, it can have a lot of charm.
