Short, horror game suggestions?

Hi guys,

I'm putting together a list of short, narrative driven horror games for people to play during the Halloween period. The list will be turned into an article which will be published on http://indiehaven.com/, a site I regularly contribute to. It doesn't matter how unknown the game is (feel free to use this as an opportunity to advertise your own projects.) It doesn't necessarily have to be a traditional horror. I'm basically looking for anything scary, (and preferably free.)

To clarify, when I say short, I mean 1-2 hours of gameplay, tops.

Here's what I've got so far:

- [redacted] Life by Katy133 (https://katy133.itch.io/redacted-life)
- Tourist by Owl Cave Studios (http://gamejolt.com/games/owl-cave-pres ... ist/107233)
- The Static Speaks My Name by Jesse Barksdale (http://store.steampowered.com/app/387860/)
- Angel In The Dark - My own game, plug, plug ;) (https://paldous.itch.io/angel-in-the-dark)

Also, while I have your attention, I hope you don't mind if I post the link to my current Steam Greenlight campaign. Every vote is greatly appreciated, so please feel free to give it a look :)

It's not Ren'Py based but the Uncle Who Works For Nintendo's a pretty solid one : http://jayisgames.com/games/the-uncle/

It doesn't necessarily have to be Ren'py based. Anything's fair game, but Ren'py games do tend to get over looked, so I'd love to include as many good ones as possible in the list!

Paramedium: A Noise in the Attic is one that I recently downloaded but haven't gotten around to playing yet. Judging by the screenshots and a quick looks at the comments, though, it seems like it's a pretty decent narrative-driven horror game.

Nachtigal is a little bit of a stretch, so if you do choose to put it up, I would probably label it as "level 0.5 horror" or something like that. The bad endings are fairly dark, though, and there are tense moments throughout.

KAIMA is a horror RPG, despite what you might think from the cutesy style. I haven't played this one, either (I have a Mac -_-), but I've played some of Nami's other games and they're always quite good.

My standard short horror game suggestion is The Loop, which takes roughly under an hour in one sitting. My other top suggestions are a few JRPG horror games--The Witch's House, Ib, and Mad Father (the last of which is also available on Steam for $5) are generally considered to be some of the top ones. If any of these three interest you, you can also check out the other games vgperson has translated. They're of varying length, but typically around 1-2 hours. Mad Father can be played in one sitting if you know what to do and how to do it.

Not the best written and executed storyline, but if you're looking for a good short scare session with a bunch of friends then this works for you.

PT

I don't care where or how you get it. It's short and it'll give everyone nightmares. Get together and play it.

RPGMaker horror games, and especially those ones, always end up on indie horror lists to be honest. I think OP is probably looking for a few lesser-known titles that aren't everywhere already?

I can heartily recommend Avior's two releases, That Bitter Taste and Voeux. TBT involves cannibalism and Voeux is more atmospheric creepy.

A quick search for terms like horror, dark, spooky, etc. in the Completed Games section also brings up a few of these games:

Don't worry about linking your own game. I did exactly that in the top post of the chain:) I'll be sure to give your game a look, I hope you'll take the time to look at mine!

I had thought about suggesting The Knife of the Traitor (it was my third VN ever and still one of my favorites), but I decided against it because it wasn't really *that* horror-like - just some bloody bad ends and darker themes throughout. I realize now, though, that if I put Nachtigal in my list, TKoT should definitely qualify as well. So seconding that.

Unfortunately, Night at the Hospital doesn't seem to be available for download; I remember trying to download it before and not being able to. :c

Self-promo ahoy.

Not exactly horror, but I think it's an appropriate short VN for Halloween.
