You have to realize that "earnings" are calculated in odd ways. You don't actually see what they "make", just a sample of a calculated month.

That being said... Many artists there do more than just make "one novel". Most do commission work and other creations. They use that as the gateway for payments. For all you know, they are dealing drugs and getting "donations". When it looks too good to be true... There must be something you are not seeing.

Look at all the listings that have $0, with similar stuff, and better art and writing.

Though, if done right, it can be similar returns. How popular are you? Do you have a lot of rich friends? Are your parents going to "donate", so you can pay your rent, and they can write it off as a "donation", of your $2000 a month apartment?

Actually I don't see any and I mean this completely non-sarcastically, but can you show me some? I think that seeing a game with obviously great art, coding, and writing and making almost nothing on patreon would really ground me.

I checked that list and I didn't check every game but the ones that are making under 5 dollars a month seem to be doing that for a reason, either completely terrible game that took 5 minutes or no game at all.

It's REALLY possible. Some evil porn doers on Patreon live 1km my house XD.
But surely there's some backfire.
First of them all, you need MONEY TO INVESTat the very beginning. And a lotta them, 'cause Patreon couldn't let find people by name, just by products or categories. And there are a lotta people there before you.
So, you pay for ads in Google, social networks (if allowed), forums and stuff to have people find your product.
Then you pay for art. And you have to pay early, as people want to see already something when the whole thing begin.
You pay a coder, you pay a musician, and maybe some voice actor if you will.The latter are very expensive.
Some people go to Patreon only after having an already established follow up for a previous masterpiece. If you didn't have one, you pay for that lack of renown.

Then, while the thing seems a cornucopia of gold pieces, it require a lotta time. A very lotta time of your own. Call the artists. Do the updates. Answer mails and calls. Solve any kind of silly issue that mojo throw on you. Are you ready to get pursued 'cause your sexy alien queen is toooo similar to another famous alien queen while she's totally different? That's happened to a friend of mine (no consequences, but was scary).

In the end, if you're lucky and rich enough, you could have 0.90$ of each dollar of income, so that 1000 dollar guy get something like 900, plus any transaction fee. Let's say it's 500 after all the expenses.

AND, if you're doing porn, you pay an high monthly fee XD (and that's explain why most of live porn is done East Europe).

That's doesn't mean you cannot succeed. That's mean that usually Patreon work better if you are the artist behind the works, so you don't pay others, and you already produce that stuff in your daily routine. That way you get an extra income for something you're already doing and find more customers for actual works that give you a living.
That's explain why industries prefer to use other channels. Why if Patreon was a goldmine they doesn't live here? Cause it cost you so much time and materials to have pledges come to you that is not always the best thing to do.

Also, as the last argument, hentai is hit and go. One week after release, it goes all over that torrent channels and say goodbye to your bucks.

I'm on YEAR 3 of my project.

You get started and report back on how "easy" it is.

Also, I now understand why AAA games get delayed and canceled or fall short of expectations and promises. It's because it's not easy. Before I started this project, I would play a game and think: Why didn't the developers do this or that?
But now I think: They probably wanted to do this or that- but they couldn't figure out how to make it work.

Mine... (But, for the sake of not listing my private life here... or being blamed of "come see me, come feed me..." I will refrain from listing my patreon account.) Mine will not show in a patreon search, because they block any account listed as "adult content", from internal searches. They advertise on other sites for exposure. Thus my statement... "Who do you know? Got any rich friends?..."

I can point you to dozens that have "incomplete" games and total garbage writing and all garbage or stolen/borrowed art... Where it shows them making $2,000 to $8,000 a month!
