Trends in Visual Novels

#1 Post by BunnyAdvocate »

Hi everyone, I'm new here, so please be gentle o/

Using the voting data on vndb.org, I did a little analysis on trends in the VN scene, and in particular, the rise of EVNs in the market. I put up the first part here if anyone is interested:

https://bunnyadvocate.tumblr.com/post/1 ... f-a-medium

This is part of a whole series of posts, with my next post looking at protags and what kinds of traits different kinds of protags are associated with using an analysis of the tags on vndb.

If you guys have any questions or comments about it, then please reply, I'd love to chat about it.

P.S. I hope this was the right forum to post it in? I wasn't sure it it'd be better in "general" or "creator's general?"

Edit: Additional analysis posts:

Trends with VN protags part 1: https://bunnyadvocate.tumblr.com/post/1 ... ey-made-of

Thanks for taking the time to do this. It's really interesting reading about OELVN market and JVN's. I think this helps developers out a bit. Thanks again :) .

Some interesting numbers, although I didn't expect horror to be such an unpopular genre. D: Thank you for compiling this!

Oh, interesting AND well-argumented. Rare to see a Tumbler with actually accurate and comprehensible statistics, at least from my experience. Can't wait for that protag-analysis

Thank you everyone for your kind words. It really helps fire me up to get to work on my next analysis post~

While it does appear to be less popular than many other genres, bear in mind that around a third of the ratings on vndb are for nukige VNs, so don't necessarily reflect the preferences of those of us who read for the stories. But yeah I was surprised too as many of the most popular VNs (and my personal favs) are classed as horror. Umineko, Saya no Uta, Kara no Shoujo, and the Zerp Escape series are all horror VNs. In one of my future posts I'll focus on horror in particular and try to find an explanation.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement. It kept me going as I worked on my follow up post.

I finished up my analysis on trends with VN protagonists if anyone is interested: https://bunnyadvocate.tumblr.com/post/1 ... ey-made-of

It's mostly the results you'd expect if you're familiar with the scene, but there are a few fun surprises.
