Hair Tropes in Visual Novels

#1 Post by BunnyAdvocate »

Have you ever wondered what a hair style implies about a character? I did a little stats analysis using the vndb character data here if you're interested:

I thought a few of you here might enjoy it to better understand the stereotypes you implicitly present when you design a character.

Nice article. I love how much work you put into it, with all the stats. Never expected to find something like this, but I love it.

nice read , thanks for sharing , I didn't expect the number of twintails is higher than wigs or bowl cuts xD

Very interesting! Some of the themes are easily identifiable and common (i.e. brown hair being kind and friendly, shoulder-length being flirty and relaxed, etc), but you went above and beyond the basics. I feel like a stronger designer already, and will definitely take a harder look at the implicities of the hair styles I draw in the future. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for the kind feedback, I'd gotten a little disheartened at first as I wasn't sure if anyone was interested, but I'm so glad you're finding it useful~

I was hoping to look more into the the OELVN and JVN divide, see if some hair styles and colours tend to come up with often in one or the other. I'd also like to track the popularity of hair styles over time, see if there's much of a fashion trend over the years. I'll also be covering female characters next time, but I stalled a little with that. There's a lot of rape and general abuse that tends to pop up for female characters in VNs, which isn't the most fun thing to discuss (for me).

I've been following you on tumblr for some time! Thanks a lot for the hard work you've put in this. I love your statistics. It's interesting and useful, made me think about my characters. It's funny how they fit well into the picture that's given by your statistics.

I'm looking forward to seeing your next post!!
