Saving, saving as

#1 Post by clueless » Thu Nov 05, 2009 12:56 am

CLUELESS NOOB

I am new to Renpy (tried it briefly before but now I'm back) and the one thing that seems daunting and terrifying to me is the "Save" screen. I don't see anything in the tutorials about simply "saving as," or what all those fields are doing there. I just want to be able to save multiple versions of my script... "Save As"... but for the life of me I don't know what this screen is all about.

Is there any information on this? Am I being a complete idiot?

Are you ingame?
Or in a script editor(jedit)?
If your not in a script editor get yourself in one
save -saves file
save as -saves file with another name

Thanks -- I'm in jEdit. I do Save as and everything but it's just not clear to me what the GUI means. It's a weird-looking dialog compared to other saves I've ever seen.

Creating a basic story is easy (I mean really basic)... but I'm just not sure I'm saving correctly or why there are so many fields on that screen.

You should always know which files you're editing even if you use the ren'py gui and integrated JEdit text editor. JEdit shows which rpy file you're editing through tabs. If you have multiple rpy files for your game, JEdit opens em all in separate tabs kinda like firefox. I think it also has a save-all option that allows you to save all rpy files currently open.

That aside, if you don't feel comfortable with using JEdit, you can still edit the rpy files using any text editor of your choice. It's not really recommended, but you can even open the rpy files in your project folder using notepad.

I realize I'm being completely dumb, but I need to follow up some more...

When I Save As, it creates a new file and tab... then it gives me an error because I have two identical files and therefore have duplicate commands.

I have pages and pages of a game that actually works well so far (or it did until I did Save As). It's just branching text at the moment. But I'm worried because I only have one main file for it, and it appears that I can't save as to back it up. I know I'm missing something basic here. I have "draft.rpy" and I just want to create "draft1.rpy" and so on. I could dissociate "draft.rpy" from the project by deleting it... which totally defeats the purpose of backing it up.

I totally get what I need to do in the game itself (it is very basic and it works)... I just don't get this one incredibly basic (?) part. And believe me, I feel pretty stupid asking a question like "how do I save."

Thanks again, any info is appreciated.

You can:
1) Copy the whole project folder -OR-
2) Make a copy of the rpy file in another folder. -OR-
3) Make a copy but change its extension to txt.
I suspect somebody is stealing my internet identity so don't believe everything I tell you via messages. I don't post or send messages anymore so don't believe anything I tell you via messages or posts.

OK, that should do it. Thanks for putting up with my questions!

Or use save as then move the ones you're not working on out of the project file, maybe.
