Recommended Text Editor (other than Atom)

#1 Post by BBN_VN »

The situation could be much worse, but I just lost several hours worth of work on a script file in Atom when the laptop lid got shut. Atom’s recover package was a flop. The file is still 299k in size, but opens as a completely blank file.

I gather this used to be a commonly reported issue so I’m just not touching Atom anymore. Fortunately I have a backup that only means I’ve lost a few hours work.

Anyone have alternative suggestions for a different editor? Is Sublime any good?

The "officially supported" editors are listed on RenPy's download page: https://renpy.org/latest.html.
Personally, I've been using the last item on that list for years without any problem. It requires Java Runtime to be installed.
It's a very stable application, and it has everything I need.

This editor also seems to be very popular: viewtopic.php?f=51&t=24091#p299093

Sublime is very good, but I personally use Visual Studio Code.

It's free, lightweight (for me it takes much less time to load than Atom), supports version control and it has a free Ren'Py language extension, though it might not be updated as regularly as the officially supported IDEs.
The most important step is always the next one.

Thanks, Donmai and RicharDann. I'm going to give Sublime a try as I've used it some at work.

I really like Visual Studio Code also. I switched from Atom a year ago and haven't looked back. Its syntax highlighting and git integration is really helpful.

+1 on Visual Studio Code. It's also what I use as a unity game programmer.
