Why is it all porn

#1 Post by SupersizeMyHeart »

Look, I'm not here to yuck any yums, I'm just curious as far as Lemma Soft is concerned - why are so many of the posted projects here just porn? Or hentai, if that's your preferred term. It's the same, who cares

Again, I'm not casting aspersions or judgement - you do you, I ain't here to judge. I'm just curious, is there another popular visual novel site that is less, uh, let's say MATURE oriented, is does this just sort of come with the territory? I'm only asking because this is primarily the site I use to advertise my game and I don't want to be targeting the wrong audience

EDIT: anyone who looks at my game can see I'm not peddling high art here by any means, lol. I just don't want to be marketing to people that will be disappointed in my less than mature content
Hey, I'm making a game about kissing cute fast food mascots! Check it out here right here.

You want the honest answer (as I see it)
Porn sells. People buy it.

My personal opinion is the world needs less smut, but you can't change what sells that easily

I say it kind of comes with the territory. From what I understand the reality of the market (or the Japanese market at least) is that many VNs, though far from all, are aimed at satisfying this "need".

Even non-pornographic VNs tend to have a scenes could be considered risque, depending on your standards. The original Steins;Gate is a sci-fi VN about time travel and a global conspiracy. Yet for little to no reason, there's a CG where the male main character walks in on two female characters having a shower. It doesn't show anything explicit, the girls are covering themselves with their hands, but it always seemed so random to me. One could argue that the scene was meant to demonstrate the panicked mindset the MC was in at the time, him acting without thinking, but I don't quite buy it.

Consider browsing the r/vndevs sub-Reddit when you have time.

Finding an audience is always a challenge. You wouldn't want your game to be ignored because it got an ESRB E rating (all audiences), or an M rating (at least seventeen). If you were creating a movie, you wouldn't want it to be ignored because its MPAA rating seemed inappropriate.

One frustrating thing I've learned: sometimes you need to rebrand a work of fiction in order to get noticed. Choices: Stories You Play is a mobile app featuring visual novels, but the creators use other terms to describe their content. Hotel Dusk and LifeSigns: Surgical Unit were marketed as adventure games. Quantic Dream's titles are sold as interactive movies, but they're not too different from visual novels.

Sometimes offering offbeat content or an offbeat presentation is a way to find an audience. The angles and graphics in Necrobarista resemble 2D or 3D animation. Littlewitch's Quartett resembles comics though floating textboxes.

So do most Hollywood movies, whether they need it or not, yet it's visual novels who get all the bad rap. Go figure.

I never thought of it that way before. I guess that's because Hollywood and the western porn industry are worlds apart, having virtually no crossover. The same cannot be said about pornographic or non-pornographic visual novels, which have been joined at the hip for quite a while.

If you look at the new games list, it's not. However, I think that adult games are more likely to make lots of (often trivial) releases, so as to drive people to remain subscribed, which boosts their numbers when it comes to releases but not total games.

Where are you even finding this "all porn", porn is not that common here.

Have you tapped into a secret porn cache the rest of us aren't seeing?

Are you SOLELY looking at the subforum marked for containing adult releases? Which you can see at a glance is much smaller than the non-smutty one?

I can't blame them for thinking that way. A large percentage of the games I've stumbled across on itch.io that are made with ren'py, are NSFW.

There's definitely a lot of smut out there on itch, especially depending on how you define your searches, and the majority of Patreon renpy games seem to be 3d porn, but they specifically said on Lemmasoft :D

I tend to think the model of the patreon adult games, which tends to be to release as often as weekly, if not monthly, tends to make them a bit more prominent on platforms that bump a game up whenever it releases. It's why LSF has a rule that there has to be a couple of months between thread bumps for a patreon game - I'm trying to make things a little more fair.

Maybe we have different ideas of what constitutes porn? There's loads of games that release under Works in Progress (regular, not specifically under Adult WiP) that are known to have extremely graphic, gratuitous sex scenes and even market themselves on that. Escort Forum, Slippery Kiss, Vampire Slave, Zen, Mister Versatile, M.A.I.D.S, etc.

EDIT: But to be honest, it's probably just that the, uh, 'mature' stuff stands out more than the non-mature stuff, and so it just gives off the impression of there being more of it than there really is. I still wouldn't go so far as to say "porn is not that common here", but yeah, it's definitely not "the majority" of games people post by any means. The title of the thread was low key clickbait to start a discussion, and that's my bad

Just wanted to say thanks for all your hard work, btw - it's gotta be tough running a website this big, I could definitely never do it. I really enjoy the whole atmosphere here on Lemma Soft, so thank you
