How Do Revshares Work?

#1 Post by DFlimbingo »

Hey! I've been researching this for a bit, and I've decided I'm just going to ask here for a direct answer. I have a revshare project in the works, and even though the release date for the project won't be for a long time, I want to know how I can easily spread the money among me and the two people helping me with the game. For example, I'm planning on releasing my game on Itch.io, on Itch for a pay-what-you-want and on Steam for free, barring a paid art book and OST. how revshare can be divided is something I can discuss with my group, but I have no idea how I would actually do the deed of paying them itself. I have no plans on making an indie company to pay them, but I doubt paying someone through their PayPal from my own every time we get a sale would be a good idea either. It's a clunky system, and I don't want there to be any issues with the money going to me first before going to them. As far as I know, I don't think it's possible to have Steam send a percentage of the money earned to different groups after each sale, either. Is there an elegant solution to this? Thanks for reading, I know this is a bit of a weird issue ^-^

What I'd probably do is either a) put an amount trigger on it (e.g. you'll disperse funds every time they hit $500 or whatever makes sense to you) or b) put in a timeline trigger (e.g. you'll disperse funds once every 1 or 3 or whatever months)

This way, everyone gets paid (well...assuming the project makes money...), but you're not stuck sending out 14 payments a day.

Much like when signing witha publisher, you'd likely write up a contract detailing when things get paid out.

When you make a sale on steam you don't get that money immediately either. They gather up sales, deduct fees, and send you a payout once a month.

Echoing this, I would definitely put whatever terms you decide upon into a contract. (Even if you 100% love and trust the people you're working with, there's a HUGE advantage to spelling out expectations ahead of time for everyone involved!)
