Would a harem with a girl as a main character work?

#1 Post by Aurelia-Aurora » Sun Jan 03, 2010 5:05 pm

I'm planning to make a harem visual novel, but because I don't have any male bases to use (I'm using the epic Celeste base), I would only be able to get females into the game. I can't wait until April for the new bases to come out. So, I was thinking. "How about a harem...with the main character as a girl?!" I'm not sure if it would work though. Comments?

No problem. There are already lots of game like that (Harem featuring female protagonist). So... just go for it ^_^

You mean, one girl, surrounded by other girls? Well, I don't see why not...

Short answer: yes. I prefer lesbian harems over hetero harems.

However, if you're planning on creating your entire cast from one base sprite, you might want to reconsider. The characters will probably look too similar to each other.

I released 3 VNs, many moons ago: Elven Relations (IntRenAiMo 2007), When I Rule The World (NaNoRenO 2005), and Cloud Fairy (the Cute Light & Fluffy Project, 2009).
More recently I designed the board game Steam Works (published in 2015), available from a local gaming store near you!

I'd be interested. I'm an open fan of reverse harems. If you're unfamiliar with this genre, then be aware that it's alive and well. Similar terms include "man harem" and "boy harem." And it's a common element in the otome game category.

Here's a few relevant sites which may help or inspire you: niche blogs at http://reverseharem.blogspot.com and http://phoenixrose.wordpress.com , a Crunchyroll group at http://www.crunchyroll.com/group/Reverse_Harem_Luv , and a general fansite at http://www.otomegames.com , . (For some reason, the person who owns reverseharem.com has placed a Team Fortress 2 site. If someone created an otome game based on TF2, then I would be amused, and very impressed!)

Also, I'm not sure if you know this, Aurelia Aurora, but there's a (not professionally translated) manga series called Otomari Honey. The series is created with a male audience in mind, but even though there is a harem of several girls, the story is about 95% focused on the central couple. I'm not sure if I like it as much as Ai Yori Aoshi, which also had a harem but used the female characters only as temporary distractions, and ways to show the male lead's strengths.

Finally, I'd be okay with a game in which the main character is disguised as a girl, or temporarily trapped in a female body.

A lesbian harem?

...sorry, I had to stop to drool for a second. Go for it!

(Heck, fate/stay night had an ending where the girl had a bisexual harem, even though she wasn't the main character per se. ^_^)

Hey which are you KYYAAA!
*Slips and Lands on back*
Uh just a second I have to clean up the drool I just slipped on.
*Grabs cloth and wipes up drool*
There we go, Now which ending are you referring to?
I imagine your talking about Tohsaka in the fate path. *Flashes back to favorite line she ever said, then shakes head*
Anyway yes a Harem with a main character as a girl could work. Could
I can name 5 off the top of my head, Well 3 of them are one series and one is a re imagining of the first one in that series, but was much better. However there are many examples, But I can only think of these 5 right now
X-Change 1,2,3
Yin-Yang X-Change
Morning Star Academy
Okay technically 4 of them actually features Male protegs but I still put them in this list for reasons in the story.
So as I said, yes!
But even if it were female proteg and male harem you could still get a fan base with great artwork and storytelling, you know the same way you get a fan base anyway.

Hmm then it must have been the ending where saber stayed.
I haven't tried for that one yet.

Honestly, any 'harem' could work as long as it was well-written. I'd recommend looking at self-help books about those kind of relationships if you're writing them well: The Ethical Slut in particular explains polyfidelitious relationships and thier pitfalls in a very interesting and accessible way.
She's sun and rain: She's fire and ice. A little crazy, but it's nice.

TL: Another one for my long-ass reading list, I see. I'm up in the Library every day now. Even the new student workers are like, "Hi, Ashley! Your library loan book came in!"

Here's a good follow-up: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gender_studies

I can't find Kelsey's (sp) gender studies done 50 years ago about how "straight" and "monogamous" people swerve as they grow up and date around and doubt themselves, but you can figure out how the survey goes, lol.

Every time I think I'm on new ground, somebody already beat me to it... damn.

This is why I assume people are bisexual with a marked preference until otherwise noted. :D
