Making a VN based on a existing comic?

#1 Post by afu » Mon Jun 07, 2010 11:50 am

Hi folks! So, I have a original online comic that I am planning to make a VN game based on. Its sort of a personal project and something I thought I would do to help me get familiarized with Renpy (coding etc) I also wanted to use it as sort of a fun small game for the readers of my comic (though its been so long I dunno how many ppl remember/read it lol)

This may sound stupid, but I was pondering this:
How much should I include the player(you) in an already existing storyline?

I would like people who have not read my comic to be able to play and enjoy the story/characters/game... but am not sure just how much information players would feel comfortable with.

The comic itself is a simple comedy romance. GXB - The player would play as Kotomi (heroine/main character) and pursue a route where she could spend one day with someone in the comic. Right now in the beginning of the game, I have the option to see profiles of other main characters and a brief intro on their relationships with her. It starts about in the early chapters of the comic so there is nothing complicated or mind-boggling ...er, I hope! lol

Thoughts? Suggestions? Any tips or things you think I should avoid?
Should I just not care and aim to complete it anyway? lol
:3 I am allll ears! Thanks in advance~

Let your mind run wild. Perhaps take a look back at your comic and say "How could I change this scene?". Try and simply make up alternative worlds to your own comic, thus that would leave to different routes.
Projects:
Alone- (Horror/Sci-Fi) Complete! Link
Demokratiya- (Adventure/Action) I'm kind of winging it with this one. Goal is 100,000 words. Yeah, it's gonna take a while.
{Last worked on Sept/28 : Word count (coding and all) ~4500}

I actually did that with my first VN (used my comic). So yeah, I think it works.

Hmm, I personally think that you should try and make your vn mostly standalone then - don't have it repeat too much from your comic, but also make it possible for people who haven't read it to enjoy the vn. Maybe they'll continue with reading the comic afterwards, or the vn itself will be a good experience that way.

Create different path and endings. There have to be some moments where you thought "hey, what if this hero didn't kill him but kill her instead?" or "how if the hero never arrived on time?", things like that... yeah, I think most of it would be "what-if" scenario.

cloudyssky >> Thank you for the support~! I will try my best! ^^

Vatina >> I have to read/play your game soon!! I am always interested in seeing how others make their game (ahh everyone is so talented!) Yeah, I was thinking of trying to make it semi-stand alone... and not really add events that have already happened in the comic itself. ^^

LVUER >> I dont think I'll be killing any characters in my comic but I understand! lol ^^ Thanks for the advice~ <3

Thanks for all the awesome advice guys! :D
Ill think about the story/paths a little more before doing any more coding... what I have right now is a bunch of "add text here" menu and dialog lol

Well, it's just an example. If your comic is a romance one, you could try the more usual "How if the protagonist fall in love with this one instead of that one?"

Yeah I was thinking of making multiple side stories and events that wouldnt happen in the comic ^^
I just don't think I will add too much because I dont want it to become TOO long or anything.
Aiming for it to be a short game.. hehe we'll see what happens ^^;;
