This contest is actually the perfect time to work on your art if you're not an artist. Since it's a short and quick game, doing your own sprites will be alot of fun and don't have to look good. This is kind of the reason I'm drawn to it. Force myself to practice drawing for a month. :)

Don't let lack of artistic ability be a deterrent! My 2009 NaNo was [text] (the original, not the recent remake), and I made it entirely with photos and a very unattractive drawing of a phone.

Like everyone says, even if you can't do art, where there is a will, there is a way. Look at me. I have absolutely NO artistic talent. None. Zero. Zilch. Look at my first visual novel, Dreams of the Skies. I'm the chief editor, not the chief artist, and even Dreams isn't 100% polished grammatically. However, with determination, creativity, and a studio budget for art the size of a sumo's waist even I am managing something. Take Luka for example. Is it good? Doesn't matter, I had fun making it, which is the whole point of making free VNs in the first place, right? And if not having anyone else to work with is the cause, ask around. From the sound of it, there are plenty of people working right now.

Anyway, that's my two cents. My flying schedule has been killing me, so I need to get a few hours of sleep before I go back to working on my project.

Oh, well. I'm just going to give it a try. I got the premise already so I'll use generic/sprites/backgrounds for it. Not too fond of generic resources, but it's alright, sounds fair.

Wooo! First pass of my game done.

Code: Select all

The game contains 1,885 screens of dialogue.
These screens contain a total of 18,437 words,
for an average of 9.8 words per screen.
The game contains 0 menus.
I started with just over 50,000 words in the novel.

So now I have a Kinetic novel with no pictures.

I have teamed up with night_serenade for my NaNo entry (and she might pull in digirin too for some art) and we are making a psychological and dystopian-themed VN. I have finished typing around 2000 words and after that some proofreading and then we'll work on with some black-and-white CGs XD

Our entry would possibly be a CG-heavy VN XD

Rift is seriously hindering my ability to get work done. :? While I've knocked out almost all the sprites, backgrounds, and part of the interface, I'm barely into the writing part. Curse you ability to play a red mage-like character!

WHAT? It's begun already!? FFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
Exactly what I was feeling when I first found out. Doomsday...er I mean NaNoRenO month creeped up on me before I even knew it. Haven't finished the writing yet even though I wrote yesterday until my fingers went numb. Don't know if I'll finish in time, but it feels to get the creative juices flowing. Good luck to everyone.

Passed 5000 words, since I am working alone maybe the game won't have as much CG as my other games. I am heading towards kinetic novel here :3

Ah, congratulations on the 5000 words, azure! And everyone else too! It seems like you're all working hard. I'm sure things will work out.
Maybe next year I'll join in too; I just thought it wouldn't be smart to have my first VN be for NaNoRenO ahaha >3<

Woo! Graphics started.

One poor little sprite. And he's not even smiling.

He is in a horror game....
