Fanmade VNs?

You know how you watch shows & realize it ended in a way you didn't want it to? (MC with different guy, tragic ending, etc)

Is it okay to create a VN based off a show (characters, setting) with an altered plot?

sorry if it's not in the right section (?)

I've seen a lot of fanmade VN's from anime shows, with different storyline. I'm sure there's nothing wrong with it.

Yeah like Kael said, there are many fanmade anime games (also known as doujin games), many of which I have played. (I'm also in the process of making one with a friend, and Kael is involved too! wow coincidence ;D)

So I'm sure it's fine, as long as you don't go around saying everything about your game is YOURS (same rule applies to fanfiction and the like).

Depends on your definition of 'okay'. :)

Will people here be mad at you? No, not as long as you credit your sources.

Are you technically allowed to do it? No, not without permission, so the people who own the IP can yell at you about it. Generally they don't, but they could.

Some archives won't accept fangames because of the legal issues.

I'd like to warn you that you'll be mostly limiting your demographic to people who are familiar with the original work.
If you're okay with that, go right ahead. But I'll never play it.

Not really, because I was going to start the VN from the very start where the MC and the boys didnt know each other and such

Maybe, but just knowing that it's based off of an existing work may by itself deter people who are not familiar with it.

Only if they realise it. :)

I read a novel-length fanfiction based on a movie I'd never seen and hadn't entirely realised the fic was FROM said movie... of course, that requires an awfully good fic author! (Also, the fic changed a vast number of details from the film and left the film continuity entirely about a fourth of the way in. She really should change a few names and sell it as a historical romance.)
