A question/Massive feature Request for Ren'py

#1 Post by humblefool »

Is there any hope of creating a GUI for the actual writing part of the program? That would make things a lot easier, methinks, and also perhaps extend the interested userbase?

SciTe is a pretty good editor, wouldn't that be enough? Because anyway the biggest part of a Visual novel is the narration/text. It's not as complex as e.g. writing interactive fiction text adventures with loads of rooms, objects that inherit properties, etc. What should the GUI do?

Here's a trick question for you: how should that GUI work?

If you mean something to track your text scenes, something like a story-writing program that allows you to keep track of how the scenes are connected (flowchart and similar), there should be some programs for that in the Resources thread. Something like http://www.habitualindolence.net/labyrinth/

Then just insert the text into Ren'Py. You'll need to add quotation marks "" and make the choices though.

There were attempts to make a GUI for Ren'Py, but these were dropped.

And that's exactly the right question to ask here. There is an absurd amount of customizability to Ren'Py, and it's not obvious that a GUI that exposed enough of it to be useful would be even remotely usable.

Now, one thing I've considered in the past is an even more customized text editor, with better support for jumping to labels in Ren'Py code, and for adding images and transitions to scripts.
