Rainy Monday [Horror] [Adventure] [RPG style]
First off, I want to indicate that I started this thread as a sort of commitment. My main objective in posting is to provide a sort of progress log to ensure that I'm staying on schedule. That being said, let me give a brief description of my game.
Rainy Monday is about an orphan named Moe, who lives somewhere in a big rainy city. One day, through curiosity and a strange sequence of events, Moe is compelled to explore an abandoned building near the bus stop. Inside she discovers a marvelous library filled with books and art. But there's also danger- strange deformed mutants who lurk through the halls, creepy journals to read, and a faceless ghost named Mr. Rusting. As Moe continues on her journey, she discovers a disturbing secret that has been hidden for years beneath the city, a secret that might tell her the truth about what really happened to her parents.
Rainy Monday is a visual novel with a focus on exploration and puzzle solving. There are currently six endings, and the endings are largely determined by your party at the end of the game. The game flow is pretty straight forward, but there are several big choices that determine your ending. There are also lots of little extras you might miss by flying straight through.
Characters:
Moe: A little orphan with a weird name and a mysterious past. She's the main protagonist.
Mr. Rusting: A faceless ghost with a bright red tie. So far he's helped Moe along in her journey, but no one truly knows his motives.
Fiona: Mistress of the Library. She seems too sweet to live in such a creepy place.
Emmett: Fiona's husband and the Master of the Library. He's stern but kind.
Chance: A strange boy Moe saved from a cage in the upper floors of the Library. He's quirky but seems to be an honest guy.
Current Status: So far, the first level is completed and I'm pretty much ready to release the demo. It should be known that this game is still really rough around the edges and is pretty much a practice run for me. I'm focusing primarily on the story, and so the graphics and customization are going to be minimal. All the game sprites are 8-bit rpg style, but the backgrounds were made in Sketch up.

I can't believe no one's commented on this project yet!
I like the example scene that you posted, but I understand that it's not typical in that it uses the 8-bit sprites. Are the other scenes just backgrounds without sprites, or are there character portraits?

Horror and RPG-styled puzzle-solving? Count me in. Also, on a side note, I love the main character's first name.
Definitely going to be keeping an eye on this.

Ah, Thank you for all the replies!
Most scenes are just backgrounds, because the game's general feel is supposed to be reminiscent of a first-person rpg. The sprites are generally just used for cutscenes, but character designs are more detailed (as in, anime style, not sprites) in the animations and cgs. The whole point of that was to experiment with blending different styles and mediums to see if I could make it work in a visual novel.

Thanks! I wanted the main character to have a name that was quirky and sort of odd, but also endearing. I hope I accomplished that.cosmic latte wrote:Horror and RPG-styled puzzle-solving? Count me in. Also, on a side note, I love the main character's first name.

Re: Rainy Monday [Horror] [Adventure] [RPG style]
The demo version is up! It encompasses the entire prologue and first level of the game. I didn't archive the game files because I'm not sure how to do that yet. I don't mind if you borrow (ie: give credit) any of my art, but I would like it if you downloaded the songs from their ORIGINAL source, or maybe just leave them alone altogether.
This release has 1,495 words and 25 menus. (I actually have about 2000 words, but these stats are just for the demo, which doesn't go farther than level one.)
Please tell me about any bugs you find. I've done thorough testing, but anything could have happened between the packaging and the release.
