1. The gameplay is dissimilar to text adventure games and will not be terribly difficult. There is no gameplay system to learn, you make decisions based off of clues from narrative text and item descriptions. The actual gameplay revolves around a menu system, not pixel hunting or item combination trial-and-error. The combat segments are non-linear and players are allowed a few mistakes rather than having to make every choice correctly.

2. Most of the characters are a mix of friendly/self-serving but in most cases this is for story purposes only. There are a few places in the game where you can trust or disavow certain characters, however.

After some delays, the demo will be released this weekend for Windows and Mac. I will post an update in this thread on release, and I will be making a thread in the demo forum as well.
