Seven Kingdoms [GxB/G] [Fantasy, Politics, Rom] (Greenlit)

#1 Post by alylt » Tue Dec 09, 2014 6:10 pm

Update 8/19 - And we have been succesfully Greenlit, thanks to everyone who voted/commented and spread the word :)

Hello and welcome to the thread for Seven Kindgoms! Yay!
Image
Image
Every seven years the seven kingdoms send their best and brightest young people to be their delegates at the Vail Isle Summit. A tradition where seven weeks are spent together to form friendships, alliances and marriages. This year, however, things are different. Since the Great Peace, never have alliances been so close to collapse, the seven nations on the razor's edge of war. What happens at this summit could very well determine the fate of the known world.

You are one of the delegates.

In this world of politics, intrigue and danger will you find love? Make friends? Alliances? Or will you fail and be forced to watch as the world once again crumbles into destruction and despair?

It is your story and it is not yet written.
Image
This game was conceived from a conversation about how disappointed I was that most games these days see challenge as synonymous as combat and only fighting. (With the occasional puzzle) There's a lot of different ways to make a game challenging!

So Seven Kingdoms: The Princess Problem (the very odd child of a Bioware Style Game (especially Dragon Age: Origins,) and an otome game) was born.
Image
Detailed Character Creation-
Develop your character from infancy to being selected for the delegation. Your story choices influence your starting skills and personality.

Six Unique Backgrounds-
Depending on your character creation choices and skills, unlock one of six unique backgrounds. (With three special backgrounds yet to be added.) Your skills, your history, your nation, how people react to you, even your motivation and personal story, all change depending on the background you choose.
Image
Over 30 Skills!-
Are you a courageous tomboy who's terrible in etiquette but has a strong natural charisma and leadership skills? Are you a conniving politician whose cunning and manipulation can bend people to her will even as she's graceless and clumsy? Are you a brilliant scholar with a great grasp on history with the charm and beauty of a toad? With over thirty skills, your character will have unique strengths and flaws that have an impact on how people react to you, perceive you and how you manage to face the challenges of the summit.

Your personality is unique!-
Your choices influence your character's personality. Your character will have different reactions and dialogue based on different personality traits.
Image
Intrigue, Secrets and Danger-
With this many important people in one castle, you can bet there's even more going on underneath the surface. Explore the castle and interact with your fellows to uncover conspiracies, secrets and clandestine relationships. Just hope you will be able to survive everything you find.

Build complex relationships-
Make your fellows your friends, your rivals, have them hold in you in romantic affection, in high respect, or all four! Your interactions and stats will lead you to complicated, four dimensional relationships with your fellow delegates.
Image
Be careful what you say-
All of your choices matter, but especially what you say. Choose your dialogue with care, what you say can make a world of difference and might even end up getting you killed. Of course, not every character will have the same attributes and skills to say or do the same things. Experiment and see if you can find all the options.

Love is in the air?-
One of the major goals of the delegation is to form marriage alliances, but no one said those have to be made only on cold political concerns. With ten romanceable characters (plus two hidden options,) you can marry for love. Or love without marrying. Or marry without love.
Image
Manage your time-
You might think that seven weeks is a long time, but not when there's so much in the world of Seven Kingdoms to do! Develop your skills, attend events, accept invitations, explore the castle, hunt for secrets, spend time with your fellow delegates and go on dates. But choose carefully, you aren't going to have time to do everything you want!

Become a skilled hostess-
Use your money and skills to host weekly events. Plan the events and send out invites. How the events go and who accepts your invitations depend on your talents and relationships. But pull off a successful event and see a huge boost to your reputation and relationships.

Demo Info/Progress:
As of 6/7:

The full demo has been released! See: https://sevenkingdomsgame.wordpress.com/demo/ for the updated links.

In the full demo you will find:
-The first three weeks of the game.
-Over 160,000 words of content.
-Six unique backgrounds.
-The ability to start 12 unique romances.
-Meet and befriend over 22 characters.
-77 possible achievements.
-A Fanart Gallery.
-11 unlockable short scenes written from the POV of the romanceable game characters.

While this is the full demo, it still contains many features that are not final. We anticipate the following might change before the final game:
-Backgrounds
-GUI (especially the preferences page/the save-load page/the relationship bars/and the bonus section)
-The Journal
-CGs (or rather the lack of them)

Loading saves from earlier versions of the demo may cause bugs. New games are recommended. (If you want to load old saves, try and load a save earlier than the end of any of the previous demos.)

You'll find lots of detailed info on the game, like world info, details on the backgrounds and characters at the game's official website: http://sevenkingdomsgame.wordpress.com/ Keep in mind it might be more fun to discover things as you play the game, so read at your own risk!

I'm new to tumblr but trying my best at http://azalynestudios.tumblr.com/

Update 5/1/15:
Hello again~ It's been a while, but I'm back with some important updates, yay~

The final demo is almost ready and about to go into beta. If early access to test/catch things/just get to play earlier is something you are interested in, sign up on our new forums here:
http://azalynestudios.forumatic.com/vie ... ?f=73&t=59

And this is what is going to be in the final demo:
-Full game up to week three
-Many new features (like a calender/nickname system/super awesome shiny new gui-stats screens.)
-Lots of bug fixes/typos
And features I'm hoping to add:
-Fanart gallery
-First Their POVS

Update: 2/16/15
Hello again everyone! Just wanted to add a link from the awesome Zelcher on tumbrl who has made a masterlist of all the various important posts on tumbrl about the game. They include people's guides/impressions and various questions I've answered there. It's easy to navigate and pretty awesome!

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1mGi ... edit?pli=1

Update: 12/28

Happy Sunday all my lovelies! Just wanted to update to let you know whats going on with/coming up for the demo!:

Known Issues
(Already fixed for next update):
-The change from 1.0 to 1.1 added a slew of bugs to the end of the demo (mostly to do with the credits images and the gallery) I’m aware of the problem and it’s already fixed! Thanks guys!

(Still under investigation)
-Occasionally clicking on the practice room in the exploration menu will jump forward in time without triggering the stats boost scene (To the best of my knowledge all events are triggering as they should)
-There are reports of accepting an invitation for Ana or Lyon but the event not triggering. I can’t reproduce the problem but I promise I’m looking into it!

The Next Update
Thanks to all the awesome feedback from you amazing peoples, the next update will have a bunch of new features and changes
-New difficulty settings
I mentioned this before, but I am adding a story mode, where challenges and hosting are easier to succeed and it is impossible to end your game by failing a challenge
(Also I will be reducing the stat requirement for passing the Defensive Instincts check in the horse challenge)
-Happy Success Noise!
Having the failures pointed out (so you know what to do the next time you want to see what you missed) but not the successful checks is giving some people a distorted perception of how well they are doing. Now you will all get a little happy noise whenever you pass a check.
-New My Page Button/My Page
The new button is impossible to miss. The My page itself has been redone and a ‘people you’ve met’ page has been added. This will allow you to have a yearbook style reminder of all the people you’ve met in the game to help people who are struggling to keep faces and names straight.
-New activity menus
For ease of readability and cleanness at the advice of several super talented art peoples, new menus have been created
image
-Other miscellaneous fixes
Typos, continuity errors and more spacing will also be fixed!
Coming in the future:
Many new gui features, including PRETTY STATS SCREENS

I’m working hard to bring you the new version as fast as I can, but in the meantime thank you all so much for your patience, support, advice and interest! It has seriously meant the world to me!!!! <3
DEMO IS OUT! YAY! http://sevenkingdomsgame.wordpress.com/demo/

This first demo covers the first week and a half (of seven planned weeks) and has 95,000 words, just under 300 choices and 38 achievements to unlock.

(Please be warned this is a large game! There are lots of different characters and lots of music. I managed to shrink it quite a bit, but it’s still pretty big)

We absolutely want your feedback! For the sake of clarity and keeping track of things, please put all technical feedback and suggestions, bug and error reports and discovered typos in the demo thread: http://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/viewto ... 45&t=29621

Keep your game/story/character feedback and comments here! This is also the place to discuss what you think will happen latter, exchange tips and hints with one another and ask questions if you are stuck or can’t figure out what achievements you are missing etc. I will give answers if necessary, but I hope you guys will be able to help one another out first!
Here are some things I would be very interested to know.
Thank you everyone who answered my questions! Since most of them were to gauge the difficulty and I have now decided to implement difficulty modes, I have taken them down. I have new questions for anyone who wants to answer though~

What is your favorite background so far?

I still like hearing about your favorite characters~

Have you noticed the effects of the personality options yet?

And finally two public service announcements:

You can't please the Matchmaker in the first week. Don't take it personally! She hates you all different but equal.

The game rewards you for building relationships. Don't worry about choosing socializing over improving stats.

Thank you so much Victorita! I really appreciate the vote of faith! You shouldn't have to wait long, demo will be out in a couple of weeks! (As soon as I finish coding in the character art and testing ~*dies*~)

Thank you so much Hazel-Bun! The art is super great! I was lucky enough to have the amazing Babana (nobutsuna here on the forums: http://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/viewto ... 62&t=23653) do all the character art and design and she was just amazing! She's so talented! I hope you all send her lots of compliments, she worked really hard and she totally deserves them!

This looks like it'll be very good :D The story sounds intriguing, it's good to know there'll be RPG gameplay elements, and I just love the art. It's spot on. I'll be keeping an eye on this.

Hi Shaples, bellice and Darksin! Thanks for stopping by and the encouraging words!

Just one clarification, this game will have role playing (in that you are a character that makes choices and has stats) but not RPG elements in terms of combat or open world exploration! There's no fighting system and any kind of fighting will be strictly written description! (And there's not much of it, most of the game focuses on social interaction!) It also has elements of stats raising too, but I tried to make everything feel like part of the narrative and not that you are just raising numbers.

(The Bioware style influence is in the backgrounds system and the way you develop relationships with people over time as well as a 'personal quest' tree) Sorry if I was confusing! I hope no one is too disappointed :)

Edit: I thought about it some more and decided I should clarify some more. In the beginning of the game you get to create your character, you make a lot of story-based choices, like what things you liked to study when you were young, or what sort of things people noticed about you when you were a baby. At the end of your 'history' you will have set all your starting stats, and based on those you will get to chose one of many different backgrounds. During the game you will have the opportunity to increase your skills, but the ways aren't always obvious.

There are two major challenges in the game: making the right choices (in terms of conversation and hosting and lots of different areas) (this influences how people like you, what will happen and all sorts of other things) and the other is skill based. Note the 'right' choices aren't always the same and vary based on what you are trying to do. You may actually not want everyone to like you, or you might be more interested in investigating the world or other things. There's lots of different ways to play the game, but all your choices will have an impact!

Skill based challenges are certain things your character will be able to do or not do based on your stats. If you are skilled enough at something (for instance if you have enough courage) you will be able to pass the test and do the thing (for instance not be intimidated by someone) but if you don't have enough, you won't be able to. The tests aren't always obvious and they often do things like unlock hidden options during conversations or events. Every week there is a big 'Challenge' that requires a lot of different stats. Completely failing the big challenges can have bad consequences, like ending your game.

Your skills and what they do and how they shape what your character does will show up in different options and in the narrative text.

...Yeah that sounds amazing :D

I'm curious how long you think it will take to do a single playthrough of the game. I assume a lot of the word count has to do with the huge variety of stats and choices, but about how much of it will we see in an average game?

Assuming it's your first play-through and you read quickly? Err....Hours! Many hours! I think we tested what's written as taking 4 hours to play through already (with a fast reader). So at least 10 hours is my current guesstimate subject to a lot of change.

You are right that there is a lot of variety, I'm not even sure it's possible for one person to see everything in the game because there are so many variations. But there is a main story that plays similarly with variations based on relationships/stats/backgrounds. Thankfully RenPy gives you the option to skip all seen text making it easier to see all the differences. So replay's should take less time. But there is always more stuff to do than time to do it, so you should always be finding new stuff!

Sounds a lot like Love Live the Queen, except maybe more ambitious in the amount of content you plan to include.
Hope it works out.

Hi Wererat, thanks for stopping by :)

I played and liked LLTQ too, (Isn't Hanako Games great?) Seven Kingdoms actually plays a lot differently (for one thing there are way fewer ways to die lol) they are both in fantasy settings and involve skills and politics, but they are very different kinds of games :)

Not that being compared isn't a total compliment! Just wanted to be clear so any huge LLTQ fans won't be disappointed if they were hoping for a similar game :)

Re: ~(Updated)~ Seven Kingdoms [GxB/G] [Fantasy, Rom, Politi

Hello everyone! Hope you are all having a lovely holiday season!

In preparation for the demo release (which should be happening VERY SOON, keep an eye out for news!) I have a couple of updates, namely about screenshots!

Our gameplay page has been updated with current screenshots: http://sevenkingdomsgame.wordpress.com/gameplay/

If you have been watching our tumblr for character updates, (see the second post in the thread above!) you might have seen it already, but we also showed some screenshots on tumblr (some you can find out the website and some only on tumblr and vice versa) here: http://azalynestudios.tumblr.com/post/1 ... oming-very

In demo news: I've been working hard to make it smaller (edit: the file, not the game, lol), but this game is big. Lots of characters, lots of music. So this is fair warning that this is going to be a big demo file!

The first demo will cover the first week and a half and comes in at just under 100,000 words. Even as I am finishing up the first demo, I'm already planning for the second, expanded demo, so you shouldn't have to wait too long before you get to play even more.

Thank you everyone for all your support, I can't tell you how much it means to get comments and views and interest! For so long this has just been something in our heads that only we saw, and sharing it with everyone has been seriously an awesome experience. I can't wait for you all to get to play the game!
