Re: Lesbian Space Pirate Dating Simulator Announcement [GxG
I'm definitely not an expert in terms of Kickstarter or crowd-funding in general. That said, think about the following:
* Make sure to look at some indie video game and visual novel projects that succeeded on Kickstarter. For instance, Starlight Vega had character profiles, screenshots, details about how the creators would use funds, and more. SC2VN did not have many details. However, the campaign talked about how the visual novel would be released, and who was creating it.
* I believe it's tough to get noticed on Kickstarter unless you have art that gets people's attention. Consider recruiting one or more reliable people to create art for your story. It can be any style or aesthetic that you think is appropriate.
* Your story might not appeal to a four-quadrant audience. However, if you plan to sell it as an indie game, then you need to make sure there's a group of people who are willing to purchase it. Ask yourself questions such as "Who is my audience? What do they enjoy? What websites and forums do they use?"
* What do you want to emphasize -- story or interaction? If you're telling a story with occasional choices, then you will probably benefit by using terms such as "visual novel" to describe it. If your goal is to emphasize simulation gameplay and interaction, then you will likely benefit by calling it a story driven game. Why do I say this? Because I do not recommend using the term "dating simulation" unless you're creating complex gameplay in which characters choose to go on dates.
* Is your story mostly worksafe, or is it strictly for adult audiences? If your story were reviewed by the ESRB or the MPAA, what sort of rating would they give it?
