Ah, I just came across this thread, and I'm so sorry to hear about your mother's diagnosis. If you have to put this project on hold for a little while, I'm sure that everyone would understand.

On a lighter note, I want to say that I'm looking forward to this game's development, since it looks amazing.

To answer your questions:
The story is very interesting, since it takes the cliche story of heroes defeating evil but spins it from another perspective.
I also prefer playing as the snarky jerk, and I'm more inclined to play as female, but when I really love a game/character, I tend to replay as male.
All of the characters look amazing, but I have to say that Ren is my favorite so far. I'm content with the romance options provided.
I think the art style is very appealing. The style is nice to look at and original, while many games tend to accomplish just one or the other.

Update 01: Weather!

I’ve incorporated weather (random and fixed) to area maps. Nothing super complicated or fancy… just chances for rain or snow to fall in the appropriate seasons and locations. Area map images/screenshots will be much later as I still have to work on backgrounds, but for now, here’s a glimpse at male protag’s sprites. Somehow having perfectly dry characters standing in a rain storm didn’t seem right.

I looove that the weather affects the character sprites! It's so logical and yet this is the first time I see it!

Man oh man, your attention to detail is fantastic, Harle. I don't think I've seen anything like it, either, but it makes so much sense and adds to the polish of the final product.

Update 02: Dialogue and Choices Screenshot
A pretty basic update. Most of this past month has been a lot of back end stuff and prototyping (writing, menus, gallery, field maps... more on that one later this week!) I however have started re-designing the GUI. This of course means I ditched half the customization I've done, but that's ok, starting fresh was a good thing and I think the end result is better.

I kind of can't believe that I didn't see this project until now. It looks so nice and polished, and everything has such attention to detail and--uh, I should just answer the questions.
Premise/Story
Does the story seem interesting? Or cliché, boring, not explained well so you really have no idea, etc?
Yup, I'm interested! I'm loving the idea of, well, kind of usurping The Heroes. And honestly, I just love the range of available options.
Protagonist
What are your favorite personalities to play as? (Personally I enjoy playing the snarky jerk who is sometimes nice and heroic.)
Would you be more inclined to play as male or female? Or would replay for both?
I generally prefer to play as a sarcastic, witty character who follows their whims instead of society's rules (so... Chaotic Neutral?). I also generally play as female, as that's what I identify as. I do sometimes play as male when there are interesting love interests not available to the female MC (which, by the way, you've definitely included in this game!).
Characters
Any characters that pique your interest or simply don't like?
I don't think there's any I simply don't like. I'm quite intrigued by all of your character designs! My favorites are probably Baylee and Acheron (and I'd definitely play as the male character for Baylee). I think I have a weakness for rogue types (the fact that he likes shiny things is a plus!) and socially awkward types.
Romance
For those that would pursue a love interest: would you be happy with the options provided?
I think there's a nice variety. Might take my opinion with a grain of salt, though, as I'm heteromantic and mostly play otomes/nonromantic kinetic novels (welp).
Art
Do you find the art style appealing (so far)?
I think everything looks wonderful so far! I'm really enjoying the character designs.
and of course...

@Alcor: Oh hey! Thanks for your responses too and well wishes. Glad to hear you would play as female, majority so far has been for male version. I'll be adding the updated art for Fem-Zhen hopefully soonish :)

...Wow. Just wow. Every single time you make a post like "oh by the way there's this element in the game as well" it just blows me away.

I remember one of the first VNRPGs that I played was sendo's NaNo game Diamond Rose, and I loved that game's map system. It looked a little different than the one that you have, but really map systems in general are something that I would like to see more often on here.

Update 04: Prototyping and Sadness
My apologies for another delayed update. Mid-February should have been:

Prototyping: Inventory, Items, and Equipment oh my! They work, huzzah. Party system is 95% complete, currently working on a swap function for party members rather than having to Remove and Add one by one.

Sadness: The last month involved packing up my apartment in a hurry, moving/driving to the other side of the country, and then spent a few days with mom... before she passed away on 03/10. To say the least things have been hectic. I honestly thought I would have at least a couple months with her, so I have some things I need to work out before I can re-evalute the Demo release date (again, blame the universe, I certainly do).

Like I mentioned before, this won't stop me from working on this project, I'm still motivated to complete it as mom wanted me to. Sorry for making this depressing! No need for sympathies, just a little understanding for delays.

Inventories! Those probably got boring to work on after a while. Thank you for sticking it out and making them nice, and good luck finishing off that party system!
