When one has lost all their humanity, what is left of them? Does it truly take a heart to be alive? That does not seem to be the case of one Hollowelle Neaera. Long since considered dead, she roams the Earth, surviving eternally out of spite of those who would hurt her when once she was alive. Ages ago, her heart was broken beyond repair. To exact her ultimate revenge, she cast a spell so grave it cursed her to forever walk the earth as an Abomination, able to pass the curse on to others who have died in great pain. For hundreds of years she has revived fresh corpses to do her bidding – her wards, her bund…
Ventio Mortis is a horror dating sim, where you play as Hollowelle Neaera, an undead creature of sorts, cursed by her own black magic to walk the earth forever until her bitter vengeance is finally satiated. With her are her dearest wards: Napoleon, a creature sewn together from all of Hollowelle's favorite bits and pieces of prettier people, and topped off with the heart of her would-be lover, had things taken another turn. Inan, the man with the steady hand, and the only ward Hollowelle has ever kept for more than a hundred years or so, due to his incredible capacity to thrive in his afterlife and lack of ties to his humanity. And of course, Drisdon, the unwavering lapdog, which despite his many faults, has stayed on Hollowelle's crew through sheer determination and his ability to make up for his mistakes ten-fold. Hollowelle and her bund require living flesh and blood in order to sustain themselves comfortably, else they'll be nothing more than barely breathing rotting corpses. However, when the newest member of the bund, Robbie, begins causing problems with Drisdon for seemingly no reason, it must be put to a stop lest the two big-mouth pugilists give way to the bund's unsavory doings.
Decide how to move forward with the bund and the detective as Hollowelle, and perhaps even find romance and companionship along the way!
6 romance options, 2 endings per character at the least are planned, as well as 3 overall endings, and many other outcomes that can be effected through gameplay to give you a unique and personal experience where your choices matter.
Hollowelle is cruel, cold, and a shell of what she once was when she was more human. She's been alive for a century too many, and it shows in her cynicism and unamused nature. As the unlikely protagonist, we wanted to try something different with her. Hollowelle is coded to be uncaring and cruel, disinterested even, when it comes to others. Fight against the stream of who she is, and be surprised by the outcomes. Lean into her cruelty, and perhaps everyone in your care will perish for it.
Hollowelle's greatest creation and favorite companion -- because she is a living toy or a friend is unclear. She has the uncanny ability to befriend just about anything and everyone, much to Hollowelle's dismay. Her unfamiliarity with humanity, being as she was crafted by a black witch, has hindered her emotional growth and maturity, but her appearance would never hint at her childish behavior.
Out of all of Hollowelle's wards, Drisdon is perhaps the most in touch with what little humanity remains within him. If that is a burden or a blessing, Hollowelle has yet to decide. His unwavering loyalty is at times the only thing that makes up for all the mistakes he makes along the way. One might even say his enthusiastic servitude could be mistaken for unrequited love, but as it stands, that's all it'll ever be.
Perhaps the only person Hollowelle respects, Inan is highly intelligent and scientific in nature. While his rigid perspective on the way the world works makes his living situation harder to come to grips with, he is all too happy to have the opportunity to take his skills to the next level with unethical practices. He's level-headed, apathetic, and perhaps the most in Hollowelle's likeness than any other ward she's ever had, and this is perhaps the only reason he's managed to stay along her side for the hundreds of years he has.
The newest addition to Hollowelle's bund, and perhaps her gravest mistake. Robbie is an uncontrollable rebel; his hatred for Hollowelle matching his resentment at being revived into her family. His brutish behavior and sloppy nature cause insurmountable issues for Hollowelle and her bund, but mostly, his constant fighting with Drisdon has become the greatest annoyance of all.
There are also two secret characters, one of which you can meet in the demo! We encourage objective feedback and constructive critism.
