Story
Based on the life (and death) of Marie Antoinette, The End of an Actress is a tragic romance story
set in a fantasy universe with close parallels to late 18th century France.
The kingdom of Artoire was once a force to be reckoned with. Governed by a string of beloved kings,
the nation was wealthy, its people prosperous. That was in the past, however.
Now, Artoire’s fortunes are dwindling, as constant wars and food shortages sweep the land.
After innumerable hard years, the people of Artoire begin to despair. Fearing for the worst,
they search for a messiah who can save them during their time of peril…
And that messiah comes in the form of a fourteen-year-old girl with blonde hair and blue eyes called Liliane.
Liliane is a beautiful, charming, elegant young lady from the foreign land of Charentes,
born to the noble Saint-Coeurs. Betrothed to the future king of Artoire, Liliane ascends to the throne upon the death
of the old monarch, to public approval and rapturous applause.
Time passes, however, and soon the public opinion towards Liliane turns. The young queen, it transpires,
is vain and flighty, and she cares not one jot about the plight of the common people.
The death toll continues to rise, new wars loom on the horizon, and despair swells.
Betrayed and helplessly hurt, a young man called Marius becomes a key player
in a revolt that will shake the society of Artoire to its very core.
Once a street urchin in love with the queen, and now a lead revolutionary, Marius is faced with a difficult decision.
Can he really bring the queen he once adored to justice… Or will his old feelings ruin all he has been working for?

Marius
The first time Marius sees Liliane, it’s during her wedding procession through the streets of Artoire.
Though a street urchin at the time without a penny to his name, Marius falls in love with Liliane at first sight;
prepared to lay down his very life for her sake, if need be.
The second time Marius sees Liliane, he’s rather more cynical. After serving as a soldier in a fruitless war,
and losing many of his comrades, he begins to wonder whether the queen cares for her people as much as they care for her.
Rendered cold and distant after witnessing so much bloodshed, Marius is determined to bring the queen
he once loved to justice, no matter the cost. Unfortunately, he isn’t as heart-hearted as he would like to think.
Liliane
Liliane was born into the noble Saint-Coeur family, and her life has been one of pleasure and excess since birth.
With wardrobes full of beautiful clothes and maids to attend to her every need, Liliane is spoiled to the extreme,
and she has no conception of how ordinary people live.
Haughty and proud to a fault, Liliane regards herself as a perfect being. She looks down upon her
subjects – Marius in particular – and, even when threatened with death, she refuses to apologise for any of her supposed sins.
It would be most unseemly for a queen to apologise to a mere commoner, after all.

Notes
The End of an Actress has a handful of choices and multiple endings.
It’s relatively short (about 75k, approx 4 hours of reading).
The story is also written in third person.
It contains 18+ content, including one sex scene, but it's quite tame.
